You’ve seen the TikToks. You’ve read all the 5-star reviews. But let’s get real: Can hair supplements actually make your hair grow faster, or is it just expensive placebo powder?
The answer? Yes, if the formula is clinically backed and filled with ingredients your follicles actually crave.
As Dr. Erin Hodges, a board-certified dermatologist, explains, “Hair supplements can be helpful, especially when hair thinning is caused by vitamin or nutrient deficiencies.”
If you’re going to take a hair supplement, make it count. Our Hair Strong supplements are clinically tested and loaded with the good stuff your hair actually needs to grow longer, stronger, and thicker. In fact, 94% of women who took Hair Strong daily for 6 months as part of a clinical study saw stronger hair after 6 months, and 89% saw faster growth.
The key ingredients that do the heavy lifting are:
But wait, it gets better. If you prefer taking a gummy over a pill, our Hair Strong Gummies have got you covered. You can take either with or without food!

Taking Hair Strong daily is a solid foundation, but here are a few extra rituals to help your strands really thrive.
Firstly, start by eating enough protein. Hair is made of keratin, a protein, so without the proper building blocks, your hair simply can’t grow.
Next, skip the tight ponytails. Constant tension on your scalp can lead to breakage and thinning over time. Let your hair breathe and give the sleek bun a break!
Third, try adding a scalp massage to your routine. It boosts circulation, supports follicle health, and gives “I’m in my wellness era” energy.
Yes, when they’re clinically tested and full of active ingredients like biotin, zinc, and folic acid. Hair Strong has the receipts.
In our clinical study, 94% saw improved hair strength and 89% self-reported faster hair growth after six months.
Same formula, same benefits. Go gummy if you prefer that over swallowing a pill.
Yep! But if you’re on a GLP-1 prescription or taking other vitamins, we recommend checking in with your healthcare provider.
Hair supplements aren’t a magic wand, but with the right formula, they can make a real difference in your hair’s growth and strength over time. Pair it with good habits, consistency, and maybe a satin pillowcase? You’ll officially be in your strong strand era.

]]>The post Slick-Back Styles Could Be Making Your Hair Fall Out—Try These Options Instead appeared first on HUM Nutrition Blog.
]]>Slick-back hairstyles create tension on your hair and scalp, which can lead to breakage—leading to shorter hairs along the hairline or at the nape of the neck. What’s more, repeated stress from tight styling can also cause hair loss, resulting in thinning or even bald patches. This condition is known as traction alopecia, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.
Chemically treated hair is especially vulnerable to damage. Chemical processes alter the protein structure of your strands, making them more prone to breakage—especially when combined with a tightly pulled-back style. Additionally, brushing wet hair into a slick-back after a shower, swim, or beach day can be especially damaging. Wet hair stretches easily and has a weaker cuticle, making it more prone to breakage

Swapping out your slick-back can feel daunting, but it can preserve the health of your hair over time. To help, we rounded up four pretty and polished hairstyles that aren’t a slick back bun or ponytail.
Opt for a looser, messier bun for an effortlessly gorgeous look. Secure the knot with a silk scrunchie or a gentle hair tie.
Resist the urge to slick your hair back to the gods and pull it into a looser bubble pony instead. The weight of the hair is distributed across several hair ties instead of one singular point pulling on your scalp, which can help reduce tension.
French, Dutch, or fishtail braids are all gentler alternatives to slick-backs. Just make sure you don’t pull the braids too tightly.
Pin the top half of your hair into a pony or a bun for a quick and cute hairstyle. By leaving half of your hair out of the hair tie, you’ll reduce tension on the scalp.

If you’ve worn slick-backs regularly, your hair likely needs some TLC. Below are the best health tips for healthy hair to keep it long and strong.
We know it may be unrealistic to completely give up your signature slick-back style. Try and incorporate other non-damaging styles into your weekly routine to give your scalp a break.
Opt for gentle ties made from silk or fabric over traditional elastic or rubber bands. They’re easier on the hair, minimizing friction and preventing snags that can lead to split ends and breakage.
Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair and more prone to breakage the longer it stays wet. A study at Yonsei University in Korea, found that air-dried hair actually showed more structural damage than heat-dried hair—likely because it remained wet for longer. Using the right blow-drying technique can help protect your strands: Dry hair on the lowest heat setting, keep the dryer six inches away, and move it continuously. And instead of slicking back damp or wet hair, let it dry first to minimize damage.
Healthy hair starts from the inside out. Add HUM’s Hair Strong, a clinically-proven hair growth gummy, into your routine to help repair and fortify your strands. It’s made with biotin, folic acid, B12, and zinc to support hair growth and give you stronger, fuller hair.
Our favorite slick-back cheat code? Pull your hair into a looser bun or ponytail and use products to smooth the sides of your hair for a slicked-back appearance without the damage.
Avoid wearing tight hairstyles daily, as hair loss can occur when tension is repeatedly put on the hair and scalp. The occasional slick-back style is still safe—just try not to pull the hair back too tightly.
Yes, but make sure you avoid taking Daily Cleanse, Base Control, and Hair Strong Gummies simultaneously, as this will exceed the daily amount of zinc your body needs.

]]>The post SPF Hair Care: Protect Your Scalp & Summer Strands appeared first on HUM Nutrition Blog.
]]>ICYMI: Your scalp is skin, too. That means it can get sunburned, flaky, and damaged from UV rays, especially if you have a part, thinning hair or wear protective styles that expose your scalp.
According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman, “Your scalp is one of the most common areas for skin cancer to occur because it’s often neglected when it comes to sunscreen.”
So yes, SPF body sunscreen is essential—but so is giving your scalp its own moment.
We get it—rubbing a thick, creamy SPF into your hairline sounds…not ideal. The good news? There are smarter (and cuter) ways to protect your scalp without the grease factor.

Between sun, saltwater, chlorine, and sweat, summer can be rough on your hair. UV rays can actually degrade the proteins in your hair and weaken your strands over time—hello dryness, breakage, and color fading. So not the vibe we’re going for.
That’s where internal support comes in. Enter our Hair Strong Supplements.
This clinically proven supplement supports stronger, fuller hair from the inside out with biotin, zinc, B12, folic acid, and Fo-Ti (an adaptogenic herb known for promoting hair growth and maintaining natural color).
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study and a self-reported questionnaire from the clinical study participants:
If you’re not a capsule girly we also have a gummy version; both deliver the same benefits. Just take it daily—any time, with or without food—and let the results do the talking!
To round out your sunny hair routine:
SPF isn’t just for your face and body—it’s for your scalp and hair too. Protecting your part is key to preventing burns and long-term damage. And while you’re at it, support your strands from within with Hair Strong. Because summer should be for fun, not frizz, breakage, or a flaky scalp.

]]>The post 5 Best Shampoos for Hair Loss—Plus 3 Remedies That Actually Work for Healthier Strands appeared first on HUM Nutrition Blog.
]]>Shampoos might not be the strongest line of defense against hair loss and thinning, yet they can improve scalp health, support an environment for healthy hair growth, and complement other hair growth treatments. (More on those later.) Nonetheless, minding your hair health consistently, which includes cleansing and nourishing it with the right products, can certainly promote healthier strands… and more of them. Taking a more holistic approach—namely, diet and supplements like HUM’s Hair Strong capsules and gummies—will also help you tackle your hair goals from the inside out.
Below, check out some of the best shampoos for hair health, spanning clean, scalp-friendly formulations and tried-and-true ingredients to combat hair loss and thinning, according to experts.

Rogerio Cavalcante, hair stylist and owner of The Second Floor Salon in NYC, says that Rahua’s Classic Shampoo strengthens weak strands while balancing the scalp, courtesy of omega-9-rich Rahua oil and palo santo. “Lightweight but moisturizing, it’s perfect for those with fine-to-medium hair who want volume without buildup,” he adds. Bonus: The formula is plant-derived and cruelty-free.
Act+Acre’s credo is skincare for your scalp, and the brand boasts trichologist-approved formulas to tackle concerns ranging from dry scalp to hair loss. One of the best shampoos for hair loss, this formulation “uses a cold-processed method to preserve nutrients, detoxes the scalp, and reduces buildup without stripping natural oils,” says Cavalcante. “It’s ideal for scalp health, which is key to reducing shedding and promoting stronger hair growth.”
Clean beauty devotees will also appreciate that it’s vegan, cruelty-free, and made without sulfates, silicones, or artificial fragrance—all of which can make a big impact. “Patients concerned about hair loss should avoid shampoos that contain irritants such as alcohol, sulfates, parabens, and fragrances,” says board-certified NYC cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD. “These ingredients can lead to dryness and inflammation, which may worsen hair loss.”
Dr. Green cites the three-step Nioxin Shampoo System—available in four kits targeted for natural vs. color-treated hair and light vs. progressive thinning—as a highly effective treatment. “This shampoo deeply cleanses the scalp while stimulating hair growth, making it an exceptional choice for anyone seeking to rejuvenate their locks,” she shares.
She breaks down their key ingredients and benefits as follows:
“It not only cleanses but can also contribute to thicker, fuller hair,” Dr. Green continues. “With consistent use, this innovative shampoo can help transform thin, lifeless hair into a vibrant, robust mane.”
Featuring derm-approved ingredients like caffeine and biotin—plus healthy hair-cycle supporting copper peptides and protective CoQ10—this sulfate-, silicone-, and paraben-free density-boosting formula reigns as one of the best shampoos for hair loss. Per Cavalcante, it’s a great option for thinning or fine hair in need of more body and strength.
True to its name, this shampoo for hair loss exudes serenity and zen. Formulated for fine-to-medium hair and suitable for oily scalps, “It’s made with organic coconut and shea butter for moisture, plus pumpkin seed oil to support scalp circulation and hair vitality,” says Cavalcante. “It’s gentle enough for frequent use and the natural scent is super calming.” Better yet, the brand is non-toxic and planet-friendly.
As great as shampoos for hair loss can be, they’re not a standalone solution to protect against or halt hair loss. That said, it’s important to manage expectations and include other vetted remedies to make a significant impact.
For starters, Dr. Green cites minoxidil as one of the best interventions against hair loss. “This topical medication is FDA–approved for reversing hair follicle miniaturization. It reduces the duration of the resting phase of hair, encouraging follicles to enter the growth phase,” she explains. She adds that minoxidil widens and strengthens hair follicles for thicker, fuller strands.
Another tried-and-true hair loss intervention? Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which Dr. Green offers at her practice. “This natural treatment utilizes the nutrients and growth factors found in your blood to improve scalp health and encourage healthy hair growth,” she explains. “The PRP procedure involves drawing a small sample of blood, which is then centrifuged to isolate the plasma. The plasma is collected and injected into the scalp.” Weakened hair follicles are then rejuvenated courtesy of PRP’s concentrated growth factors and proteins, resulting in the stimulation of new hair growth.
Last but not least, be sure to check out HUM’s Hair Strong supplements—featuring biotin, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, zinc, Fo-Ti, and PABA—to fortify the foundation of your hair-growth regimen.

]]>In addition to keeping Hair Strong in your lineup, keep reading to see what a dermatologist and a hair stylist recommend day in and day out to grow, maintain, and style your longed-for locks.

On your wash days, it’s key to focus not only on your strands but also your scalp. “A clean scalp is the foundation of healthy hair,” says Rogerio Cavalcante, hair stylist and owner of The Second Floor Salon in NYC. “Use lukewarm water, gently massage your scalp with your fingertips (not nails), and avoid products with harsh sulfates or alcohols that can strip moisture.”
As for how often you should wash, Cavalcante suggests doing so every other day or every three days at most. “Going an entire week without washing can lead to buildup and scalp irritation,” he cautions. Again, he emphasizes that a healthy scalp is key to maintaining healthy hair.
To get your hair health trending in the right direction, Cavalcante suggests buying a wooden or boar bristle brush. “They will distribute natural oils from your scalp down the hair shaft,” he shares. “This keeps your hair naturally conditioned and reduces the chance of breakage.”
There’s a good chance that heated tools are in your styling lineup—but they’re not exactly doing you any favors to promote hair health and prevent damage. As such, Cavalcante advises heeding the following tips for applying heat to your hair:
“If you find yourself constantly fighting your hair’s volume or texture with a flat iron, consider a smoothing treatment like keratin instead of frying your strands every day,” he shares. “It’s a much healthier option in the long run.” Air drying whenever you can and using cooler settings on your blow dryer will also help.
Harsh UV rays aren’t only damaging to your skin. Cavalcante says they also wreak havoc by drying out your hair, fading color, and potentially burning your scalp. That said, he advises using hair products with UV filters if you’re spending time outdoors. He also gives the green light to hats for a physical barrier of protection.
Tie your hair back daily? Doing so might be convenient and low-fuss, but it also stresses your strands. “Super tight ponytails or sleek buns every day can lead to hairline breakage or even traction alopecia,” Cavalcante warns. Be sure to let your hair loose often, use accessories that won’t cause breakage, and avoid anything too tight or taut.
The right hair care products and habits will do a lot of the heavy lifting to support your hair, but your diet can also inch you closer to longer, stronger, more luscious locks. “To promote the health and growth of hair follicles, maintain a balanced diet that is rich in iron, zinc, and vitamin D,” advises board-certified NYC cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD.
Some of the top foods on her list include:
“Foods with antioxidants—such as strawberries and dates—can also protect the hair and scalp from UV damage, oxidative stress, and free radical damage to prevent breakage,” she adds.
On the vitamin and supplement front, Dr. Green adds that biotin and B vitamins can help support overall hair health and growth. “Hair growth relies on vitamins and minerals, and a deficiency in these nutrients can significantly impede hair growth,” she explains.
Consider taking a supplement like HUM’s Hair Strong daily. It contains biotin, folate (vitamin B9), and vitamin B12, as well as zinc, Fo-Ti, and PABA. Together, these help support hair growth, fullness, strength, and even color.
Before you hop into bed, Cavalcante suggests applying a small amount of a nourishing oil—like argan or jojoba—to your ends to keep them hydrated and prevent breakage. “A silk or satin pillowcase also helps reduce friction and frizz,” he adds. (Bonus: The luxe material can simultaneously benefit your skin health, as well.)
The hair health tips above can certainly help your strands on a daily basis. But for extra credit, Cavalcante advises giving them some extra pampering with a deep conditioning or repairing mask once weekly. “Look for masks with ingredients like keratin, protein, or natural oils that restore strength and elasticity,” he shares.

]]>We tapped a hair stylist and a dietitian to see which items are all-stars for hair health that might not be in your current lineup but probably should be.

Dealing with dull and lifeless strands? If so, a clarifying shampoo can come to your rescue. “It’s such a great way to bring the life back in to your hair, especially if you tend to use a lot of styling products and/or only wash once per week,” says Michelle Cleveland, a celebrity hair stylist, extension artist, and owner of Hair Addict Salon and Extension Bar in Toms River, New Jersey.
For ultimate shine and bounce, she suggests using a clarifying shampoo for the first wash and using your regular shampoo for the second. (How often you should use it will depend on a range of factors like your hair type, water quality, and the products you use. Once or twice a month could be good to start and gauge your results.)
According to Cleveland, bond repair and bond-multiplying products are another underused but overperforming product for healthy hair. “These types of treatment not only strengthen the hair but also increase shine and elasticity and promote hair growth,” she says.
Need inspo? Olaplex is a leader in bond-repairing products and a staple on many “best of” lists for hair health. I’m also a big fan of Ranavat’s Regenerative Shampoo and Conditioner, featuring the clean beauty brand’s proprietary Veda Bond Complex that supports hair resilience and promotes softer, silkier strands. (The jasmine scent is also divine.)
Hair oil is one of my own personal hair health staples as of late. Better yet, it’s an excellent multitasker, so you can whittle down your product arsenal without skimping on results. “Hair oil serums can provide a multitude of benefits such as frizz control, UV protection, heat protection, and shine,” Cleveland shares.
“This is by far the most underused hair growth product available today,” says Cleveland. Best of all, you can buy it without an Rx, and it’s easy to apply. According to Cleveland, two to three months of consistent use is all it takes to witness significant changes in hair density.
Let’s pivot to surprising dietary game-changers for hair health. Umo Callins, MS, RDN, CSSD, CPT, a sports dietitian and fitness coach with Well Rooted Health and Nutrition in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, calls out eggs for their robust nutritional profile. “They’re high in protein and biotin as well as other nutrients like vitamins A, D, and E, which are all beneficial for hair and scalp health,” she says.
Perhaps you’re privy to the fact that salmon is great for your skin. But did you also know that fatty fish is also fantastic for hair health? “Salmon is rich in both omega-3 fatty acids and protein, which are both beneficial for your hair and scalp health,” says Callins. “Omega-3s can help reduce inflammation and may be helpful in cases of severe scalp inflammation.”
P.S. In case salmon doesn’t make it on your plate regularly, check out omega-3 supplements like HUM’s OMG! Omega the Great.
On the supplement front, biotin stands out as a tried-and-true all-star for hair health. “Biotin is frequently featured in hair supplements because it supports the production of keratin, which is the main protein that makes up hair,” Callins explains. She says that biotin deficiency is rare, and many people who eat foods with biotin—including eggs, salmon, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, and almonds—should get enough of it in their diet already.
However, if you really want to take your locks to the next level, adding a supplement with biotin to your routine can help. Extra points go to those that contain other power players for hair health, such as HUM’s Hair Strong capsules. In addition to biotin, Hair Strong also offers:
Don’t forget: As is the case with most supplements, consistency is key for best results. (In case you forget to take them, try habit stacking. You can also opt for Hair Strong Gummies, enjoying them as a post-meal sweet treat daily.)

]]>The post The Benefits of Fo-Ti: HUM’s Hair Strong Supplement Key Ingredient appeared first on HUM Nutrition Blog.
]]>Healthy hair is about nourishing its roots and promoting stronger, healthier strands, and there’s one supplement that can help you achieve all of these goals: HUM’s Hair Strong. Among its ingredients is Fo-Ti, a powerful herb with many benefits. Revered for its ability to support hair growth and vitality, Fo-Ti has earned a reputation as a secret weapon for luscious locks. With its highlights in antioxidants and nourishing properties, it has become a key component in HUM’s formula for vibrant, resilient hair.

Fo-Ti, also known as He Shou Wu, is a herb native to central and southern China, derived from the root of the Polygonum multiflorum plant. Rich in over 100 chemical compounds, including stilbenes, flavonoids, and phospholipids, this powerful root has been utilized for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. While known for many benefits, including its anti-aging properties and ability to support liver and kidney function, Fo-Ti is particularly beneficial in promoting strong, healthy hair, preventing premature graying, and restoring natural hair color.
Fo-ti’s process starts with the removal of the root from the Polygonum multiflorum plant. After harvesting, the roots are carefully cleaned and cut into smaller pieces. They are then boiled or steamed in a black bean and water mixture to enhance their chemical profile and boost their effects. Once cooked, the roots are left to dry until they develop a rich brown color. Then, they are packed in a powder, capsule, or extract form for preservation.

Fo-Ti is more than just a traditional herb—it’s a nutrient powerhouse that supports hair health from the inside out. Packed with essential minerals such as zinc, iron, iodine, potassium, manganese, and sodium, it provides the building blocks necessary for strong, healthy hair. These nutrients are all vital in maintaining scalp health, improving follicle function, and promoting overall hair vitality.
A standout advantage of Fo-Ti is its rich antioxidant content. Antioxidants are crucial for protecting hair from environmental damage, such as pollution and UV exposure, while reducing inflammation that can contribute to hair loss. By supporting healthy scalp function and combating oxidative stress, these compounds help ensure hair follicles can grow strong, resilient strands.
Additionally, active compounds like anthraquinones and stilbenes further enhance Fo-Ti’s benefits. These powerful antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, fight oxidative damage, and promote overall hair and scalp health, making Fo-Ti an ideal ingredient in hair-focused supplements like HUM’s Hair Strong.
Fo-Ti provides a host of benefits for hair health, addressing some of the most common concerns related to growth, strength, and appearance. This herb promotes hair growth and helps prevent hair loss by stimulating the scalp and improving follicle health, creating a foundation for stronger, fuller strands. It also works to fortify hair follicles, enhancing the overall texture and resilience of the hair.
A unique benefit of Fo-Ti is its potential to reduce graying and restore natural pigmentation, making it a popular choice for those combating age-related changes. These effects are rooted in both traditional Chinese medicine and modern research, with evidence supporting its claims. One study’s results found Polygonum multiflorum (PM) extract improved the viability and activity of human dermal papilla cells, increased hair growth-related proteins, and reversed the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), promoting longer hair growth by delaying the transition from anagen to catagen in human hair follicles.
Beyond supporting hair health, Fo-Ti offers a range of other health benefits, many of which are attributed to its adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens help the body cope with stress by regulating the production of stress hormones, promoting balance and overall well-being. Fo-Ti helps reduce stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of calm and improving mental clarity. It has also been linked to improved energy levels, enhanced immune function, and even better sleep quality, making it a versatile option for many individuals.
The best way to reap the benefits of Fo-Ti when it comes to your hair health is by taking HUM’s Hair Strong supplement. Not only is it simple and effective, but all you need is two capsules (or gummies) per day to support hair growth, reduce hair loss, and enhance your hair’s overall vitality. The supplement combines Fo-Ti with other highly beneficial key nutrients like biotin, folic acid, and zinc to create a powerful formula for stronger, healthier hair.
For those who prefer other forms of the herb, Fo-Ti teas (made from root powder) and liquid extracts are also great options. You can easily incorporate them into your daily routine by sipping a cup of Fo-Ti tea or adding a few drops of the extract into a small glass of water and drinking it.
If you’re looking to boost their hair benefits alongside HUM’s Hair Strong supplement, we recommend combining some of these transformative haircare products:
Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Clarifying Sugar Scalp Scrub
Starting with the base of the roots, you should give your follicles a deep clean with Mielle’s Clarifying Sugar Scalp Scrub, creating a natural, purifying regimen. HUM’s supplements nourish hair from within, supporting growth and follicle health, while the scalp scrub exfoliates and removes impurities with sugar granules. Infused with rosemary to improve scalp health and mint to invigorate, this pre-shampoo treatment revitalizes the scalp, creating an optimal environment for hair growth. Together, they provide a clean, nourished scalp and fortified, healthy hair from root to tip.
Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo
After using the scalp scrub, Mielle’s Rosemary Mint strengthening shampoo creates a powerful duo and enhances the effects. Hair Strong provides nutrients like biotin and fo-ti, which support follicle health, while Mielle’s biotin-enriched shampoo strengthens strands externally, reducing breakage. The shampoo’s rosemary and mint oils boost scalp circulation, improving oxygen delivery and stimulating growth, complementing HUM’s focus on internal nourishment. Mielle’s deep moisture formula also helps prevent split ends and repairs damage.
If you want to grow and maintain a healthy, strong head of hair, having a reliable oil with natural ingredients is key. This scalp and deep oil treatment creates the perfect opportunity to do just that. The oil uses a blend of castor oil and black cumin seed to moisturize, protect strands, and reduce breakage. It also delivers 15x stronger hair and 94% less breakage in just one use, making it ideal for weak or brittle hair. Together with Hair Strong, they help promote longer, healthier hair by strengthening and protecting strands.
To maximize Fo-Ti’s effects, pair the herb with a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Foods that support hair health, such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and proteins, can enhance Fo-ti’s effects, too. Additionally, staying hydrated and maintaining overall wellness will help Fo-Ti work more effectively, promoting healthy hair growth and stronger strands from the inside out.
HUM’s Hair Strong supplement is a standout choice for anyone looking to support healthy, vibrant hair. Formulated with a blend of clinically researched ingredients like biotin, zinc, and folic acid alongside the Fo-Ti, this supplement works synergistically to promote hair growth, strengthen strands, and maintain healthy hair color while preventing premature aging. HUM is known for its commitment to quality, sourcing each ingredient with care to ensure potency and efficacy. Every capsule provides targeted nutrients that not only nourish your hair but also support overall wellness.
Users rave about the supplement’s noticeable improvements, with many reporting fuller, healthier hair and restored confidence. One reviewer says, “I’ve been taking Hum Hair Strong vegan capsules for two weeks, and I’m really happy with the results! My hair feels stronger and healthier, with noticeably less breakage and increased shine.”
Another mentioned the convenience of the supplement and noticeable changes in her hair strength, saying, “My hair already feels a bit stronger and less prone to breakage. The capsules are easy to take, and I appreciate that they fit seamlessly into my daily routine.”
Fo-Ti is an ancient Chinese herb that comes from the root of the Polygonum multiforum plant. It has many healing benefits throughout the body, including promoting hair health by strengthening hair follicles, supporting scalp circulation, and preventing premature graying through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Fo-Ti is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience mild side effects like upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. It can also interact with certain medications and, in some cases, cause liver problems. If you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking medications, consult with your physician before taking Fo-ti.
Most individuals begin to see improvements in their hair health within four to eight weeks. However, results can vary depending on factors like diet, stress, and overall health.
While Fo-ti is a natural herb that is generally safe for most, it may not be recommended for women who are pregnant or those with certain health conditions like liver issues.
Yes, HUM’s Hair Strong Supplement is designed for long-term use, as its ingredients are carefully sourced and formulated for daily support. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor to make sure that it’s a good supplement for you and to stop taking it if you begin experiencing any adverse side effects.
Fo-ti is an incredible herb recognized for its ability to promote strong hair growth and maintain natural color, making it a key ingredient in HUM’s Hair Strong. Combined with other powerful nutrients like biotin and zinc, Hair Strong provides comprehensive support for healthier, fuller hair from the inside out. Adding this one supplement to your daily routine can address several common problems like hair thinning, breakage, and premature aging while nourishing your hair at the root. If you’re looking to tackle common hair concerns like thinning or breakage, now is the perfect time to take the next step. ]]>The post 9 Ways to Nourish and Remedy Your Dry Scalp This Winter appeared first on HUM Nutrition Blog.
]]>Ahead, discover the ins and outs of getting rid of dry scalp in winter and beyond, according to a dermatologist and a scalp specialist.
A perfect storm of conditions can trigger your otherwise balanced scalp to get dry and flaky once temperatures drop by year’s end.

“During the winter, there is usually a significant drop in relative humidity,” explains Mayara Macedo, hairstylist and scalp specialist at The Second Floor Salon in NYC. “Combined with heating systems that dry out the air, this creates harsher conditions that leave the scalp and hair more prone to dryness and irritation.”
Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, notes that there are a few additional reasons why your scalp could get dry—no matter if it’s during the winter or any other time of year. These include:
“Lastly, our skin tends to get drier as we age,” Dr. Saedi shares. Dryer skin often means a dryer scalp, which will require modifying your current hair and scalp care routine.
While you may think that dandruff and dry scalp are one and the same, they’re not interchangeable. Dry scalp is typically triggered by a lack of moisture (i.e., dry skin), whereas dandruff is caused by excessive sebum production and yeast overgrowth on the scalp.
“Dandruff is more likely the culprit of your dry, flaky scalp if your flakes are paired with a consistently oily scalp,” Dr. Saedi explains. (Note: Flakes from dry scalp tend to be small and white. On the other hand, dandruff flakes are large, yellow, and coated with oily residue.) “Dandruff is completely normal and is typically easily treated and managed with an anti-dandruff shampoo,” she assures us.
If you’re dealing with dry scalp and are determined to fix it, follow the expert-approved tips below to quench your strands through winter and beyond.
“To adapt your routine, wash your hair less frequently in the winter to preserve natural oils,” Macedo advises. Depending on your hair condition, 2 to 3 washes per week should suffice during the colder months. Conversely, she says that you may need to switch this up during the summer, washing up to 3 to 4 times a week to thoroughly cleanse sweat and product buildup.
Dr. Saedi says that you’ll need to vary your number of wash days depending on your specific condition, so pay close attention to your individualized needs to maintain a balanced scalp. “Dry skin can be a sign that you are over-washing or under-washing your hair. Stripping your hair and scalp of its natural oils too often can dry it out,” she explains. “Conversely, not washing it enough can cause oil to build up and irritate the scalp.”
TL;DR: The more oily your hair and scalp are, the more you’ll need to wash it and vice versa.
During winter, Macedo recommends prioritizing the likes of:
She also suggests incorporating cleansing clay masks into your regimen to replenish essential minerals and improve scalp health.
Note: If your scalp is suddenly dry out of nowhere, a new product in your arsenal could be the culprit, says Dr. Saedi. As such, it’s always wise to integrate one new item at a time to see if it’s working well or not. If you’re convinced a new product is triggering a reaction like dryness, the derm advises ceasing use and waiting to see if your scalp recovers.
As tempting as it may be to warm yourself from head to toe in a steaming hot shower, doing so will likely lead to a dry scalp, hair, and skin, Macedo warns. A 2022 study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine also found that long and continuous water exposure—especially at higher temperatures—damages skin barrier function.
As such, aim to take relatively short, lukewarm showers in the wintertime, especially on your hair-washing days.
Getting rid of dry scalp to boost balance and overall hair health will also require some effort after washing.
Per Macedo, you’ll want to:
Scalp massages don’t only feel great; they can also play a part in getting rid of a dry scalp and flakes. “A scalp massage can help loosen and clear dry skin, product buildup, and excess oil from the scalp,” Dr. Saedi shares. “It will also help stimulate blood circulation which can be helpful for hair growth.”

In addition, scalp massages have the potential to:
You can choose to take the DIY route by massaging your scalp for about 5 minutes (whether your hair is dry or while shampooing), visiting a scalp spa, or investing in tools. Both pros recommend the GrandeHAIR Stimulating Scalp Massager for total hair and scalp health.
Personally, I can’t resist the coziness and warmth of a beanie in the winter (or the casual vibes of a baseball cap year round). However, those who are dealing with a dry scalp and irritation need to be more cautious about how often they wear these toppers.
While you can rest assured that hats don’t cause hair loss, they may trigger inflammation and rashes by harboring sweat and debris. “Minimize wearing hats for extended periods, as they can trap moisture and create irritation,” Macedo advises. In short, aim to wear them when you need them most—i.e., braving cold temps outdoors—but taking them off once you’re safely indoors and/or working out.
To completely get rid of dry scalp, you’ll want to visit a professional for a personalized diagnosis and plan. For instance, Macedo notes that high-frequency treatments can effectively rehabilitate your scalp and strands by boosting circulation.
“If your dry scalp is instigated by drier, cooler weather, a humidifier can certainly help,” says Dr. Saedi. The same goes if you struggle with dry skin—whether chronic or due to dry winter air and heating system—thanks to the added moisture these devices provide.
Last but not least, your dietary intake has the potential to help or hinder your hair and scalp health. Per a 2022 review, the right nutrients can “counter oxidative stress, repair cellular damage, support cellular functions, and restore hair growth.”
As we’ve previously covered in our dietary guide to hair growth, standout nutrients include but aren’t limited to:
In addition to following a healthy, diverse diet rich in whole foods, you may also want to level up your routine with supplements, such as:
Different environmental conditions require different protocols to promote healthy hair and skin. Since winter is colder and drier than summer, hydration and nourishment are paramount. “Winter care should include deep hydration and protective, soothing [products], while summer hair care benefits from UV-protective sprays to guard against sun exposure,” Macedo explains.
You should also wash your hair less in the winter (2 to 3 times per week, on average) and more in summer (3 to 4 times) for optimal balance.
You’ll need to make a concerted effort to remedy dry scalp, such as by using clay masks, essential oils, scalp serums, as well as employing the lifestyle hacks shared above. “Combining these treatments at home or at the salon can typically [yield] improvement within 4 weeks with 2 sessions per week,” says Macedo.
Natural oils that can nourish a dry scalp include:
While Dr. Saedi says that more research is needed to uncover the connection between diet and scalp dryness, some research suggests associations with certain foods.
For instance, a 2022 Cureus study found the following foods were associated with exacerbating seborrheic dermatitis (i.e., itchy, scaly rashes primarily on the scalp):
On the other hand, citrus fruits, leafy greens, and other veggies were associated with improving the condition.
In short, alongside other contributing factors (e.g., age, health status, climate, lifestyle), diet is likely to affect the health of your scalp and hair for better or for worse—hence underscoring the importance of a nutrient-rich, diverse diet.
Macedo says that exfoliating your scalp isn’t always necessary. However, it can certainly help those under specific conditions—namely if your scalp is oily and dead skin (i.e., those pesky flakes) accumulates.
How often you should exfoliate your scalp varies based on your hair type, lifestyle, and climate. “For normal or combination scalps, exfoliate every 1 to 2 weeks. Oily scalps benefit from weekly exfoliation to prevent buildup and regulate oil production, using products with acidic ingredients,” she explains. “Dry or sensitive scalps should be exfoliated every 2 to 3 weeks with gentle, calming products, like those containing lavender.”
Remember: Manual scalp massages, tools, detoxifying treatments, and scrubs all count towards your exfoliating quota.

]]>This article examines dandruff vs dry scalp and each condition’s causes, symptoms, and treatments, helping you better identify and treat your condition effectively.

A dry scalp is caused by a lack of moisture, often due to the body not producing enough sebum (an oil the scalp naturally produces). Weather, harsh products, and diet (including hydration levels) can all lead to dry, dehydrated skin, resulting in dry scalp. This condition causes the flaking of small, dry, white skin flakes. With dry scalp, your entire body will likely have dry skin, and your hair will look and feel dry.
Dandruff, on the other hand, is a scalp condition caused by an overproduction of oil and an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp. In healthy cell turnover, skin cells die and shed off gradually. For those with dandruff, the speed of this process increases, causing dead skin to shed more rapidly and in larger quantities. These flakes are larger than dry scalp flakes and are yellowish and oily. Unlike dry scalp, dandruff is caused by a fungus, often Malassezia, which can also trigger seborrheic dermatitis.
The primary cause of dry scalp is a lack of moisture, but several factors can contribute to this condition, including:
Dandruff is primarily caused by an overgrowth of the yeast-like fungus Malassezia. This fungus thrives on the oils produced by hair follicles. Other contributing factors include:
To treat and prevent dry scalp, consider the following approaches:
Treating dandruff takes first confirming your symptoms, which then can be followed by addressing the underlying causes:
If you notice that treatment and prevention techniques aren’t working for either dandruff or dry scalp issues, you may want to consider seeing a dermatologist. Your symptoms may be the cause of other conditions, such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or eczema. A professional may also be able to offer alternative treatment ideas or prescribe a prescription shampoo or topical steroid.
Understanding the differences between dry scalp vs dandruff is key to effectively identifying and managing these conditions. While a lack of moisture with dry scalp can be treated with a little TLC, dandruff is slightly more complex and requires anti-fungal or potentially professional treatments. By distinguishing between the two conditions and using appropriate treatments, you can achieve a healthier scalp and live a more comfortable, confident life.

]]>I booked an appointment at The Luxury Hair Spa, a freshly opened scalp spa in Newport Beach. Located in an accessible spot, the exterior–while inviting was no match for what was behind those doors. It’s worth noting that this particular spa invests in some of the most cutting edge scalp care technology, but maintains a holistic approach to hair health by combining science and relaxation. I was greeted by friendly staff who allowed me to tour the space before handing me a robe and slippers and telling me what an amazing treatment was in my very near future. The goal of the scalp salon was clear–not so much focus on the hair, but instead my therapist was there to nitrite the health of my scalp, promote hair growth and enhance my overall well-being.
The journey begins with a thorough scalp analysis, a crucial step in understanding the specific needs of your scalp and hair. Using advanced diagnostic tools, the skilled specialists at The Luxury examine your scalp’s condition, checking for issues such as dryness, oiliness, dandruff and hair thinning.
This is a way of seeing your scalp like never before. The up close view of my scalp looked unreal and I was able to examine my hair strands at a macro level. That alone was worth it. I was suffering from product build up and this detailed analysis allowed my therapist to tailor treatments that addressed my unique concerns. It was nice to know that no matter what the concern, whether you’re dealing with hair loss, scalp irritation, or simply looking to enhance your hair’s vitality, the personalized approach ensures that you receive the most effective care possible.
After a stimulating electrotherapy comb session, which helped to kill any bacteria, was red light therapy, something that’s woven into the spa’s repertoire of treatments. So what exactly does it do? Red light therapy, or low-level laser therapy (LLLT), uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the scalp and stimulate cellular activity. It’s essentially non-invasive (and safe) and helps to increase blood flow to the hair follicles, enhance cell metabolism and reduce inflammation (we all know about this). The outcome is an optimal environment for hair growth.
I’d enjoyed this portion, but I was also eager to see what was next–that was after a soothing neck and shoulder massage. Honestly, each step felt like an adventure.

Finally it was time to make my way from the open salon space to my private treatment room. And before I jump into the details of the treatment, I have to say that the stage is set for a full-on zen experience. From a warmed massage chair, to ambient lighting and what sounded like soothing binaural beats, I was ready for this curated hair growth experience.
This place had no shortage of hair growth and repair treatments using some of the best products on the market. We started with a shampoo, which was more a shampoo of the scalp then the hair shaft because as I was told hair heath begins at the root–literally and throughout the skin that makes up your scalp. The techniques used are intended to stimulate the scalp, improve blood circulation and encourage the growth of healthy hair by removing anything that could be blocking the follicle from getting the nourishment it needs.
This cleansed the scalp–on a way deeper level, removed dead skin through a process called “Hydra-dermabrasion” and included a mild peel with the intent to extract scalp impurities–and that could be anything from product to environmental elements. It also infused my scalp with antioxidants.
The whole experience was a back-to-back application of scalp health topicals and techniques. Another “wow moment”? The oxygen spray where you’re in somewhat of a dome and it fills with oxygen to hydrate and take your scalp health to the next level. You’re wondering when does the goodness end, right?
No visit to The Luxury Hair Spa would be complete without indulging in one of their signature scalp massages. These massages are next level and not only a treat for your senses but also play a vital role in maintaining scalp health. My therapist walked me through every step of the way and then went on to use a combination of techniques to knead and manipulate the scalp, relieving tension and improving circulation.
At this point, I was in another dimension–or at least it felt that way. My time in the scalp treatment room was up and I was ushered to the open styling space for a reexamination of my scalp and a top-tier Dyson blowout. The end result? My scalp looked fantastic! No build up, no flakes and my hair shafts appeared pump and hydrated. As for my hair, the blowout was perfection and my hair was glistening.
What sets The Luxury Hair Spa apart from some of the other spas, in my opinion, is its commitment to providing a comprehensive, science-backed approach to scalp and hair care within a luxurious and serene environment. The spa’s ambiance, with its calming décor and soothing scents, enhances the therapeutic experience, making each visit a holistic retreat..
Visiting the scalp spa felt like much more than just a beauty treatment; it felt like an investment in my overall well-being. With a range of advanced hair growth treatments, cutting-edge red light therapy and indulgent scalp massages, This was a comprehensive approach to nurturing my scalp and hair–not to mention I learned so much. The personalized care and serene environment ensured that I didn’t just leave looking better but feeling rejuvenated and refreshed and equipped with the knowledge to put my scalp health first as a means to achieve healthier hair. If you’re seeking a transformative experience for your hair and scalp, a scalp spa is the way to go–especially at The Luxury Hair Spa since they have some of the most advanced treatments and use the most exclusive products. It’s a drive for some LA girlies, but it’s worth every mile! A 10/10, this is the ultimate destination for unparalleled hair care!
