  • 6 cups bone broth (beef, chicken, or fish)
  • 2 cups baby shrimp
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup spinach or kale (high in vitamin C for collagen synthesis)
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms (rich in zinc, which supports collagen)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (has sulfur, which aids collagen formation)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp turmeric (anti-inflammatory benefits)

Instructions:

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a skincare superstar in so many serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens that hydrate and nourish the complexion topically. How to Hydrate the Skin From Within With Hyaluronic Acid

When ingested through foods and supplements, hyaluronic acid can expand beyond its topical skincare benefits and support deep and lasting hydration that ultimately supports overall health, too. “Consuming hyaluronic acid-rich foods and supplements helps replenish and support HA production in the body, enhancing your skin’s moisture from within,” Bianchini confirms. Additionally, Jenna Volpe, RDN, LD, CLT, says these foods and supplements can also enhance the effects of collagen by binding moisture to collagen in our skin.

There’s just one problem, though: Finding foods rich in HA isn’t as easy as it seems. “The best food source of hyaluronic acid is bone broth, which is made by simmering animal bones and joints in hot water for an extended period of time,” says Volpe. “This process is generally effective at extracting constituents such as hyaluronic acid and certain amino acids (building blocks of protein) from the joints of the bones.” In addition to bone broth, Bianchini says foods that support HA production or slow its breakdown in the body include citrus fruits, soy products, and magnesium-rich foods.

Citrus foods—especially oranges—contain naringenin, which can help prevent the breakdown of HA in the body. And soy products such as tofu, soybeans, and tempeh have phytoestrogens that increase HA in the skin. And, according to both Bianchini and Volpe, magnesium-rich foods (think: avocados, nuts, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens) “may help boost our natural production of hyaluronic acid,” says Volpe.

Since HA isn’t as readily available in the foods we eat, hyaluronic acid supplements are an excellent way to hydrate the skin from the inside out. “They help boost hydration, improve skin elasticity, and support tissue repair,” says Bianchini. “HA has a unique ability to hold water and support it within a structure-like frame; therefore, it helps keep skin smooth, supple, and resilient over time.”

Hyaluronic acid is also a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and Volpe notes that it may be considered a “fermentable carbohydrate polymer molecule, which can sometimes trigger or worsen symptoms of gas and bloating, especially among people with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or a very compromised gut.”

In addition to sipping bone broth and adding more foods that support HA production, supplementing hyaluronic acid is an easy way to boost your efforts. “Many studies have found that taking hyaluronic acid internally (from foods and supplements) can be effective at hydrating the skin from within,” says Volpe. She notes that HA supplements attract water and help it “bind to our skin cells in a way that promotes younger, healthier skin.” Some studies also confirm that taking HA supplements orally can significantly reduce wrinkles.

Summertime skin blemish breakouts, let’s dive in!

Summer months mean sunshine, beach trips, barbecues, and pool parties. But amidst all the fun, you might notice something not so fun: extra breakouts. It’s actually quite common to experience an increase in acne during the summer months, but it’s totally treatable, so no need to worry.

Below, we break down why you might break out more in the summer and how to clear it up with an expert-approved summer face skincare routine. Plus, the best supplements from yours truly that will help ease skin woes for the long haul.

Why You Might Break Out More in the Summer

If you notice more pimples popping up during the summertime, it’s not just in your head. The sunny season can cause more blemishes. “Warm, hot, humid environments can cause increased oil production,” says board-certified dermatologist Caren Campbell, MD. “Acne-causing bacteria likes to grow in oil, so the more oil on the skin, the more the bacteria—which leads to more breakouts.”

You might also be touching your face more often than usual (to wipe away some sweat), which can transfer the oils from your hands to your face. If you’re using sunscreens or makeup formulated with oil, they can potentially cause more breakouts, too.

Summertime Face Skincare 101

If you’ve noticed new breakouts appearing in the summer, don’t stress. We put together an expert-approved face skincare routine to banish breakouts.

  1. Get a benzoyl peroxide or sulfur face wash

Using the proper face wash can help fight against acne-causing bacteria and clear up your complexion. “The best place to start is to use a five percent or less benzoyl peroxide wash or sulfur wash once per day,” Dr. Campbell says.

Word to the wise: Skip any kind of oil cleansers as well. Acne forms due to an excess of oil, so adding more oil to your complexion can lead to more breakouts.

  1. Get started with a retinoid

“Retinoids like tretinoin or over the counter adapalene are the mainstay treatments for acne,” Dr. Campbell says. Use a pea-sized amount all over the face two to three times per week. If you have sensitive or dry skin, put a moisturizer on top after applying your retinoid.

A note of caution: Retinoids remove the top layer of dead skin cells so they don’t clog pores. Using them will make your skin sensitive to the sun, so apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to protect your complexion. 

  1. Hands off

Your hands carry oil and bacteria (sounds gross, but it’s completely normal). Touching your face transfers that to your skin, which can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Keep your hands off your face when possible, and be sure to regularly wash your hands with soap and water.
