Say hello to your most hydrated, dewy summer skin yet.

In this article, we explore hyaluronic acid, hyaluronic acid supplements, and how to truly hydrate your skin from the inside out.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a skincare superstar in so many serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens that hydrate and nourish the complexion topically. The compound occurs naturally within the body and keeps the skin supple and healthy, but it can make an even bigger impact (and do so much more than that) when used from the inside out.

“Hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps the skin, supports healing by helping cells move and regenerate, reduces inflammation, and promotes new blood vessel formation,” says Jennifer Nicole Bianchini, MS, RD, IFNCP, RYT, a functional dietitian, mind-body wellness expert, and founder at Body to Soul Health. “It naturally increases during injury and repair, making it key for healthy, glowing, resilient skin.”

How to Hydrate the Skin From Within With Hyaluronic Acid

When ingested through foods and supplements, hyaluronic acid can expand beyond its topical skincare benefits and support deep and lasting hydration that ultimately supports overall health, too. “Consuming hyaluronic acid-rich foods and supplements helps replenish and support HA production in the body, enhancing your skin’s moisture from within,” Bianchini confirms. Additionally, Jenna Volpe, RDN, LD, CLT, says these foods and supplements can also enhance the effects of collagen by binding moisture to collagen in our skin.

There’s just one problem, though: Finding foods rich in HA isn’t as easy as it seems. “The best food source of hyaluronic acid is bone broth, which is made by simmering animal bones and joints in hot water for an extended period of time,” says Volpe. “This process is generally effective at extracting constituents such as hyaluronic acid and certain amino acids (building blocks of protein) from the joints of the bones.” In addition to bone broth, Bianchini says foods that support HA production or slow its breakdown in the body include citrus fruits, soy products, and magnesium-rich foods.

Citrus foods—especially oranges—contain naringenin, which can help prevent the breakdown of HA in the body. And soy products such as tofu, soybeans, and tempeh have phytoestrogens that increase HA in the skin. And, according to both Bianchini and Volpe, magnesium-rich foods (think: avocados, nuts, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens) “may help boost our natural production of hyaluronic acid,” says Volpe.

hyaluronic acid supplements

The Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Supplements

Since HA isn’t as readily available in the foods we eat, hyaluronic acid supplements are an excellent way to hydrate the skin from the inside out. “They help boost hydration, improve skin elasticity, and support tissue repair,” says Bianchini. “HA has a unique ability to hold water and support it within a structure-like frame; therefore, it helps keep skin smooth, supple, and resilient over time.”

Taking a hyaluronic acid supplement, such as the HUM Nutrition Hyaluronic Glow Gummies, can also help support important skin functions that support the overall look and health of the skin, which Bianchini says plays a key role in maintaining a plump and healthy glow. And, as an added bonus, consistent use of a hyaluronic acid supplement can also minimize the look of fine lines “by helping the skin retain moisture more effectively.”

FAQs

Is Hyaluronic Acid Good for Your Health?

Hydration is key to overall health and, in addition to supporting the skin, hyaluronic acid can help keep the eyes and joints healthy. The compound can also lubricate the body’s connective tissues—aka, fascia—and plays a key role in keeping them functioning properly. Additionally, HA supports wound healing by encouraging blood flow and reducing inflammation. Some studies show that it can even aid in bone strength by supporting skeletal development and regeneration.

Is It Safe to Ingest Hyaluronic Acid?

“Hyaluronic acid is considered safe for more people, and adverse reactions are rare,” says Bianchini. That said, there are a few things worth considering before adding a HA supplement to your wellness (and beauty) regimen. “Since HA plays a role in cell growth and regeneration, anyone with cancer or a history of it should check with their doctor before taking it,” Bianchini adds. Hyaluronic acid is also a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and Volpe notes that it may be considered a “fermentable carbohydrate polymer molecule, which can sometimes trigger or worsen symptoms of gas and bloating, especially among people with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or a very compromised gut.”

Is Hyaluronic Acid OK to Take As a Supplement?

In addition to sipping bone broth and adding more foods that support HA production, supplementing hyaluronic acid is an easy way to boost your efforts. “Many studies have found that taking hyaluronic acid internally (from foods and supplements) can be effective at hydrating the skin from within,” says Volpe. She notes that HA supplements attract water and help it “bind to our skin cells in a way that promotes younger, healthier skin.” Some studies also confirm that taking HA supplements orally can significantly reduce wrinkles.

The Takeaway on Hyaluronic Acid Supplements and Skin Care

If you’re ready to hydrate from within, try the HUM Nutrition Hyaluronic Glow Gummies. These gummy supplements are made with both hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to support skin hydration and collagen production for a more supple-looking and glowing complexion with reduced fine lines.

As the chill of winter approaches, so does the struggle with dry and patchy skin. Between the drop in humidity, icy winds, and dry indoor heating, your skin can be left feeling parched, irritated, and far from its natural radiance. If you’re prone to tight, flaky, or inflamed skin during the colder months, you’re not alone—it’s a common challenge many face this time of year.

Winter skin struggles are frustrating, but they don’t have to be. HUM provides a holistic approach that targets the root causes of dryness and heals from the inside out. By combining targeted supplements with simple skincare and lifestyle adjustments, you can achieve a total rehydration reset, restore your skin barrier, and maintain a healthy glow all winter. Ready to say goodbye to winter skin struggles? Let’s dive in!

Why Winter Wreaks Havoc on Your Skin

Winter is notorious for bringing harsh environmental changes to the body, easily disrupting the skin’s delicate balance. During this time, humidity levels dip, both outdoors and indoors. It’s also important to note that cold air naturally holds less moisture, making the environment drier and leaving your skin prone to dehydration. When there’s less moisture in the air, the skin’s water content evaporates more quickly, leading to dryness, flakiness, and that uncomfortable, dry, patchy texture. Unfortunately, spending time indoors isn’t much better—central heating systems, though necessary for warmth, only further dry the air’s humidity. This combination of dryness and heating system creates the perfect environment for your skin to lose hydration.

If the humidity issues weren’t consequential enough, the addition of cold temperatures and crisp winds can also weaken the skin’s natural barrier. The barrier locks in moisture and protects against external irritants, but exposure to cold conditions can disrupt the barrier, causing tiny cracks in the skin, allowing water to escape and irritants to penetrate. As the barrier deteriorates, your skin becomes more sensitive, making you more prone to redness and less equipped to retain essential nutrients.

Essential HUM Nutrition Supplements to Combat Dry, Patchy Skin

When winter wreaks havoc on your skin, taking a holistic approach that addresses both external and internal factors is the best way to go. HUM offers a range of supplements that target dry, dehydrated skin from the inside out. Here are the best products to support hydration, repair, and overall skin health and how each works to do so:

Arctic Repair

Arctic Repair is a winter skincare savior, thanks to its potent combination of Lingonberry seed oil and Vitamin A. Lingonberry is packed with essential fatty acids, including omegas 3, 6, and 9, which are crucial for maintaining and restoring the skin’s natural moisture barrier. By strengthening the barrier, the supplement helps your skin retain moisture while resisting the harsh effects of cold weather. The antioxidant properties of Lingonberry and Vitamin A also protect against free radical damage, promoting skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Together, these ingredients hydrate and improve skin density and resilience, ensuring your skin stays plump, soft, and healthy throughout winter.

Skin Squad

Skin Squad is a must-have for anyone experiencing redness, inflammation, or dryness during winter. Its unique formula contains nine strains of probiotic bacteria that balance the gut microbiome, promoting a healthier connection between digestion and skin health. By reducing inflammation and feeding good bacteria with konjac root extract, Skin Squad helps minimize skin irritation and restore hydration. As a result, you have clearer, calmer skin.

Daily Cleanse

Daily Cleanse is a top choice for detoxification, designed to flush out impurities that cause skin dryness and irritation. Its blend of detoxifying ingredients, including chlorella and spirulina, supports the body’s natural detoxification processes, eliminating toxins that may otherwise lead to breakouts or cause dryness. When you flush toxins and other impurities out of the body, your skin clears up and smoothes. smooth, clear skin from within.

ACV Gummies

Apple cider vinegar is a well-known ingredient for gut and skin health, and HUM’s ACV Gummies nutritionally upgrade the supplement while making it a convenient grab-and-go option. The gummies are packed with probiotics to balance your gut microbiome, which plays a critical role in reducing skin flare-ups and improving overall hydration. It also has a healthy dose of B12 for cellular energy, supporting digestion and the body’s natural detoxification process.

It’s important to know that while supplements are fantastic in combination with other hydration techniques, they’re not a quick fix. Dermatologist Hannah Kopelman notes that it typically takes about 4-8 weeks to see noticeable results, so consistency is key. “While supplements help, they should complement a solid skincare routine and a healthy diet, not replace them,” she says.

Fueling Healthy Skin with Diet and Hydration Habits

“Staying hydrated in the winter is just as important as in the summer,” explains Kopelman. “but it’s easy to overlook because we don’t feel as thirsty when it’s cold. Dry, heated indoor air and chilly winds can sap moisture from our skin, so drinking water consistently helps maintain our skin’s hydration levels from within.”

Hydrating and Omega-Rich Foods to Help Skin Retain Moisture

In addition to drinking water, the foods you eat also play a significant role in maintaining your skin’s hydration and barrier function. Incorporating hydrating foods and omega-rich options into your diet can support your skin’s ability to retain moisture and combat dryness. Additionally, incorporating a supplement like Arctic Repair into a diet packed with omega and water-rich foods only amplifies the strength of your skin’s barrier for maximum hydration.

Hydrating Foods:

  • Cucumber (supports skin elasticity and intensely hydrates)
  • Watermelon (fights free radicals and boosts hydration)
  • Oranges (hydrates the skin and supports collagen production)
  • Leafy Greens (i.e., spinach, kale) (promotes skin hydration and repair)

Omega Foods:

  • Walnuts (reduces inflammation and supports the skin barrier, maintaining hydration)
  • Fatty Fish (reduces redness and inflammation while supporting skin health)
  • Chia Seeds (helps strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and retain hydration)
  • Avocado (promotes skin elasticity and helps maintain moisture)
  • Flax Seeds (helps maintain hydrated and smooth skin)

Winter Skincare Routine Tips

Adjusting your skincare routine during winter is essential to combat dry, patchy skin caused by cold weather and low humidity. Simple tweaks to your daily regimen can help lock in moisture, protect your skin barrier, and restore your natural glow.

Upgrade Your Moisturizer

The lightweight moisturizer you use in your daily routine is typically enough, but when the cold weather hits, it may not be enough. Kopelman recommends switching to a heavier moisturizer—”Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter to lock in moisture.” These ingredients will help replenish moisture and strengthen the skin’s barrier to keep hydration locked in. Apply it immediately after cleansing while your skin is still slightly damp to maximize its absorption.

Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating has very low humidity and can easily dry out the air along with your skin’s moisture levels. Adding a humidifier to your sleeping space can restore lost humidity, preventing your skin from becoming tight and flaky.

Avoid Harsh Cleansers

Certain ingredients in cleansers, like sulfates and alcohols, can be harsh on the skin, stripping the skin of natural oils and causing damage to the skin’s barrier. If your skin is red, irritated, or dry, try switching to a cleanser with soothing ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, or oat extract that will cleanse without stripping away essential moisture.

Pair with HUM Nutrition’s Skin Squad and Arctic Repair

While topical care is crucial to the skin’s hydration, nourishing your skin from within is just as important. HUM’s Skin Squad supplement contains probiotics that balance your gut microbiome, reducing inflammation and dryness while promoting smoother, more hydrated skin. Pairing it with Arctic Repair (rich in omega fatty acids and Vitamin A) enhances your skin’s barrier strength and hydration. Combining these tips with HUM’s supplement will enhance the results of your topical skincare routine.

Other Lifestyle Tips to Avoid Dry and Patchy Skin

Avoid Hot Showers

Although a steaming hot shower feels amazing on chilly days, it’s doing more harm than good for your skin. The hot water strips away your skin’s natural oils, which is essential for retaining moisture and maintaining a strong barrier. This leaves your skin more vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Instead, opt for lukewarm showers as much as possible and limit the time you spend in there to avoid further dehydration. After you get out of the shower, immediately apply moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Protect Your Skin Outdoors

“Bundling up with scarves, gloves, and hats isn’t just about staying warm—it’s also vital for your skin,” says Kopelman. “Cold winds can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to chapping and irritation. Wearing protective clothing acts as a barrier, shielding your skin from the elements. I always suggest using a lip balm with SPF and applying a rich moisturizer to exposed areas like your hands and face before heading outside.”

Manage Stress to Support Skin Health

Stress can negatively impact your skin, resulting in flare-ups, dryness, and breakouts due to a disruption in the hormonal balance. To avoid this, try and manage stress as much as possible using mindful techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing. Additionally, supporting your body with a healthy diet and HUM supplements can improve other aspects of your health, like digestion and inflammation-two influences of skin health:

  • ACV Gummies: These gummies contain probiotics to promote gut health, which is crucial in regulating skin inflammation. By balancing the gut-skin axis, it helps minimize stress-related flare-ups.
  • Daily Cleanse: The supplement works to support your body’s natural detoxification process, flushing out toxins that can lead to dullness or breakouts.

The Takeaway on Dry Skin

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should have to suffer through dry, irritated, patchy skin all season. Evaluating where you may be dehydrated, whether you need to drink more water, upgrade your moisturizer, or incorporate a supplement (or two) into your diet can make all of the difference in your skin’s health. Not to mention, combining HUM’s supplements with simple lifestyle adjustments will amplify the benefits of hydration and resilience. Products like Arctic Repair, Skin Squad, Daily Cleanse, and ACV Gummies are all suitable choices that work from the inside out. Don’t let winter dryness take over. Build your personal winter skin care plan for lasting comfort and radiance. Your skin will thank you!

Battling dry and patchy skin this winter? You’re not alone! As temperatures drop, we face unique challenges that can leave our bodies craving moisture, often without even knowing it. The dryness of cold, crisp air and indoor heating can diminish your skin’s glow, while shorter days and seasonal stress drain your energy and weaken your immunity.

Staying hydrated during winter is about much more than drinking water — it’s about nourishing your skin, bolstering your immune system, and maintaining energy levels to thrive during the darkest months of the year. We explore how to combat dry skin, dehydration and how to achieve hydration this winter. With a few of our go-to winter wellness tips and HUM’s best supplements, you’ll have everything you need to stay hydrated, healthy, and radiant all season long.

Dry and patchy skin. Woman hydrating her skin.

Why Are We Dehydrated in The Winter?

“Hydration in the winter is crucial due to lower humidity levels and increased use of heating systems,” says Tatiyana Canady, a Holistic Nutritionist and founder of aesthetic atelier Aurum. “All of the fluctuations can cause transepidermal water loss, which negatively impacts the skin, and prohibits your body from retaining needed moisture. Our body is made up of 75% water, and relies on water to keep our systems healthy.”

What Winter Hydration Means For Your Overall Health

Skin Health, Immunity, and Skin Supplements to Help

Winter’s dry air and indoor heating can wreak havoc on your skin, stripping it of moisture and leaving it dull, flaky, and irritated. Hydration replenishes your skin from within, restoring elasticity and maintaining a radiant glow even in harsh conditions. But drinking water alone isn’t enough, supplements can help drastically—HUM’s Arctic Repair helps support skin elasticity with omega 3 and 6, maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier and locking in hydration. It also works as an anti-inflammatory, soothing dry, irritated, inflamed skin.

HUM’s Daily Cleanse supplement furthers skin health by supporting your body’s natural detoxification processes. Ingredients like chlorella and dandelion root enhance the body’s ability to flush out toxins through the kidneys, liver, and skin, helping combat winter dryness and environmental stress.

This detoxifying harmony also benefits your immune system. By reducing the load on vital organs like the liver, Daily Cleanse frees up energy for immune defense. Its antioxidant and antibacterial properties fight free radicals and environmental stressors, which can weaken immunity during cold and flu season. Pairing Daily Cleanse with proper hydration can help keep your mucous membranes moist, creating a stronger barrier against viruses. Together with hydration, it offers your immune system protection and the boost it needs to thrive in winter.

Energy and Mental Focus

Even mild dehydration can sap your energy and cloud your focus, making the shorter, darker days feel even more challenging. While also a go-to for its detoxifying benefits, HUM’s Celery Juice Gummies are essential for restoring energy and sharpening mental clarity. Celery is naturally packed with important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Combined with other added nutrients like Vitamins A, C, B6, and folate, the gummies help maintain a healthy balance, supporting cellular energy production and reducing fatigue. Their nutrients also enhance circulation, ensuring your brain gets the oxygen and nourishment it needs to stay sharp. Together, the nourishment helps keep you energized and focused, even in the midst of winter’s sluggishness.

Tips for Handling Dry and Patchy Skin and Staying Hydrated All Winter Long

Increase Water Intake and Track Your Progress

Hydration often takes a backseat in cold weather when thirst cues are less noticeable. Luckily, it’s an easy fix, and Canady says that many people notice an immediate improvement in their hydration levels by incrementally increasing their water intake. To do this, start by setting reminders to drink or using a water-tracking app to ensure you’re drinking enough throughout the day. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommended the following daily water intake:

  • About 15.5 cups (91 ounces) of fluids per day for men
  • About 11.5 cups (125 ounces) of fluids per day for women

Many people don’t like the taste of plain water, and if that’s the case for you, adding fresh fruits and vegetables can give drinking water a whole new experience. You can also try warm, hydrating beverages like herbal teas, warm lemon water, or even heated (diluted) fruit-infused waters.

Incorporate Hydrating Foods

Loading up on fresh fruits and vegetables (thanks to their naturally high water content) contributes to your daily water intake and can significantly improve hydration levels in cold weather. Even winter’s produce lineup is surprisingly rich in hydrating options while providing essential nutrients to support the body. Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are high in water content (86% and 91%) and packed with immune-boosting vitamin C. Vegetables like cucumbers (96%) and celery (95%) or even leafy greens can be great additions to winter meals like soups or even salads for a hydration boost. Broth-based soups, especially those made with vegetables and lean proteins, are an optimal choice, combining warmth, hydration, and nutrients in one comforting bowl.

Balance Electrolytes

“Proper hydration requires more than just a clean water source,” Canady says. “Our bodies need electrolytes to hydrate properly so our fluid stays in the body and isn’t released in the urine.” Dry indoor air and heating systems can increase water loss through the skin and respiratory system, leading to electrolyte imbalances. Foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and sodium—like bananas, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens—can help, but supplements like our Celery Juice Gummies offer a convenient alternative. These gummies provide a natural electrolyte boost in a delicious, easy-to-take form, ensuring your body stays hydrated and energized without the need for sugary sports drinks.

Upgrade Your Skincare Routine

Staying cooped up inside with the dry air and heating systems most likely means that you’ll have to upgrade your skincare routine. After evaluating your water intake and electrolytes, Canady suggests taking a closer look at your skin health and asking yourself what changes you can make to determine your new skincare needs. “Is it time for an upgrade to a heavier face cream? Can I include a hydrating serum in my regimen? “Most times, the answer is yes,” Canady says, “so chat with a skincare professional to choose the best one for your skin.”

In addition to upgrading your skincare products like moisturizers and serums, consider other aspects of hydration. A hot, steamy shower, while as tempting as it is to take when it’s cold out, can further dry out the skin. If you notice your skin is dry, itchy, or flaking, consider switching to an extra-hydrating body wash and moisturizer for the time being. Using a humidifier can also be extremely beneficial and help the skin replenish lost moisture from indoor heating.

Have red bumps on your arms, legs, or butt? Learn how to get rid of keratosis pilaris (KP), according to a dermatologist and an aesthetician. Plus: if it’s actually possible to treat KP for good.

Now that spring is officially in gear, you may be rotating your wardrobe and unearthing your shorts, skirts, and short-sleeved shirts from hibernation. Yet if you struggle with keratosis pilaris (KP), you might be a little less enthusiastic to don these warm-weather staples.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with these red bumps on your body. If you have them and they don’t bother you, that’s great. But if you’re on a mission to get rid of keratosis pilaris to feel more comfortable and confident in your skin, you’ll want to keep reading. Ahead, you’ll discover the best KP tips and treatments, vetted by experts.

    What Is Keratosis Pilaris?

“Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition characterized by bumps that are red and inflamed, typically on the backs of the arms and thighs,” explains Kerry Benjamin, aesthetician and founder of StackedSkincare. Due to its appearance, KP is often referred to as “chicken skin” or “strawberry skin.”

“I think of keratosis pilaris as a mix between eczema and acne: It’s dry like eczema but bumpy like acne,” shares Kseniya Kobets, MD, director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care in New York. While it isn’t necessarily attractive, rest assured that it’s harmless. It neither causes adverse effects for your health nor warrants medical attention.

    Keratosis pilaris on leg

    What Causes Keratosis Pilaris?

“KP is a keratinization disorder that leaves extra keratin (dead skin) in the pore,” Dr. Kobets continues. A buildup of keratin will ultimately yield the red bumps indicative of KP.

Benjamin adds that KP is primarily caused by genetics, age, and hormones. “As we age, our bodies produce less sebum, which helps keep our skin moisturized and supple,” she explains. “Without this moisture in the outer layer of our skin, keratin can build up easily and clog pores. This blockage creates dry, scaly bumps that may look red, inflamed, and unsightly, but generally aren’t uncomfortable.” (That said, even children are susceptible to it. According to the National Library of Medicine, KP typically appears in childhood and becomes most extensive during the second decade of life.)

Research shows that atopic dermatitis (the most common form of eczema) is often linked to KP, and both experts concur that people with dry skin tend to be affected. However, it can develop across any and all skin types and tones. “The keratin plugs can appear darker in melanin-rich skin, or after picking or aggressive exfoliation of the skin,” Dr. Kobets adds.

How to Get Rid of Keratosis Pilaris

Now, for the million-dollar question: Will keratosis pilaris ever go away for good? Unfortunately, Dr. Kobets says that it’s unlikely to clear KP completely. “Just like eczema or acne, we usually cannot ‘cure’ KP, but can use treatments to improve symptoms and keep them under control,” she explains,

To aid your quest to win the battle against the bumps and help treat KP, heed the experts’ top tips below.

    1. Use a Physical Exfoliator (with Caution)

“In my experience, physical exfoliation is the most immediately rewarding treatment as it immediately smooths out the bumps,” Dr. Kobets shares. However, there are several caveats for this tip. She warns that physical exfoliants can be pretty rough, so they’re not ideal for those with reactive or sensitive skin. The dermatologist also advises using a physical scrub only up to twice a month, or as tolerated.

Moreover, Benjamin is less enthusiastic about physical exfoliants when it comes to treating KP. “While it may be tempting to buff away all those little bumps, [I advise against] using body scrubs and exfoliating mitts, which will irritate the skin further,” she says.

Both points considered, if you do choose to proceed with a physical exfoliant, go slow and steady.

    2. Apply an Exfoliating Chemical Peel

According to Benjamin, chemical exfoliants are more ideal to get rid of keratosis pilaris without aggravating your skin. “The key to eliminating KP is to soften and remove the excess keratin that’s causing the bumps,” she explains. “While physical scrubs can cause irritation, gentle body peels can safely dissolve the protein plugs without injuring the skin.”

She suggests using the TCA Multi-Acid Body Peel by StackedSkincare once a week, which offers:

    • Lactic acid to simultaneously exfoliate and moisturize
    • Salicylic acid to clear pores and calm inflammation
    • Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to resurface the skin

    3. Avoid Hot Showers

Benjamin says that hot water can dry out your skin (even if your skin type isn’t inherently dry), thus making KP worse. “Stick to lukewarm showers and limit your time in the water to 10 to 15 minutes,” she suggests.

    4. Moisturize ASAP After Bathing

Sure, we’re all for making your daily bathing regimen a relaxing form of self-care. That said, Benjamin advises picking up the pace once you hop out of the shower or tub—and to not dry off your body completely. “Lock in moisture by applying a hydrating moisturizer to damp skin,” she advises. “This helps to seal in the moisture and prevent your skin from drying out.” Dr. Kobets also suggests moisturizing directly after toweling off.

    5. Choose the Best Moisturizers for KP

Some ingredients in body lotions and moisturizers work better than others to get rid of KP. “Keratolytics like urea or ammonium lactate creams used daily can be helpful to keep down the hyperkeratotic plugs,” Dr. Kobets explains. Need a rec? The Carea Cream by Soft Services contains 10 percent urea, which exfoliates and moisturizes (as well as hydrating squalane and soothing colloidal oatmeal) to reduce bumpy texture, quench dryness, and clear away dead skin cells.

She also recommends using a lotion that contains ceramides once or twice daily—and especially right after you exfoliate. FWIW, I’ve recently had success tampering down my own KP by integrating The Body Cream by Nécessaire—which contains five essential ceramides, as well as smoothing and skin barrier-strengthening niacinamide—into my post-shower lineup.

Prefer to keep your routine as low maintenance as possible? A body spray can come in handy. Benjamin suggests keeping the Hydrating Body Serum by StackedSkincare in the shower so you can spray it on as soon as you turn the water off. “It combines exfoliating lactic acid with plant-based hydrators like squalane and jojoba esters to plump the skin with moisture,” she explains.

    6. Consider Throwing Retinoids into the Mix

“In my practice, I also employ topical retinoids to treat keratosis pilaris,” says Dr. Kobets. There’s a lot that goes into her standard protocol to get rid of KP, but she says it’s typically a balance of using exfoliants or retinoids three times a week and applying lotions with ceramides once or twice daily. “You can also alternate with salicylic acid, urea, or ammonium lactate creams,” she shares.

If skin gets irritated following physical exfoliation—which she notes is common in patients with more melanated skin—there’s the potential of developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. If and when this occurs, she recommends applying hydrocortisone (Rx or OTC) one to three times a week.

“Also, when you start using exfoliators, keratolytics, and retinoids, watch for irritation so it does not worsen KP in the long run,” Dr. Kobets advises.

    7. (Maybe) Try Out Laser Hair Removal for KP

Those seeking out the best treatments for KP may have read that laser hair removal can help… but is it legit? “Laser hair removal can sometimes help with ingrown hair that can cause pigmentation on legs,” says Dr. Kobets. However, she says that laser hair removal hasn’t helped KP in her own experience.

Anecdotally, though, some people do find that it can help reduce bumpiness and improve the appearance of KP. (I’ve personally tried it out for myself and believe that it’s moved the needle at least moderately for the red bumps on my legs—that is, on top of following the majority of the KP-clearing tips on this list.) Just note that you’ll probably need to commit to multiple laser hair removal treatments and that it’s not a surefire solution to treat KP.

    8. Stick to Your Routine

All points considered, exfoliating gently and moisturizing with the right ingredients are tried and true ways to get rid of KP. However, Benjamin says that the real hack to treat keratosis pilaris is to stay consistent with these steps. “Peels and serums treat the problem, but won’t solve it,” she reminds us. “Your body will still produce too much keratin, so be diligent with your peel and moisturizer regimen for the best results.”

Moreover, certain solutions (or a combination thereof) will work better for some than others. “Honestly, it’s a trial and error with many of these,” Dr. Kobets notes. If your bumps are getting worse or don’t respond to treatments, it’s worth visiting your dermatologist to find the best KP treatments tailored for your needs.

Baby, it’s cold outside! But don’t let that stop you from achieving soft hair, strong nails, and glowing skin. Read on for expert-backed nail care, hair care, and skincare tips for the winter.

The weather outside is frightful—and the way it affects your hair, skin, and nails is, erm, not very delightful. Cold, windy weather outside paired with dry, hot heat inside can cause some serious dryness.

“In the cold winter months, humidity levels are often lower,” explains Shani Darden, celebrity esthetician and founder of Shani Darden Skin Care. “The dry air can cause your skin to feel parched and appear dull.” This goes for your nails and your hair too: The lack of moisture in the air leads to dryness, which can cause damage down the road.

The good news? There are a few small changes you can make to your beauty routine during the colder months to keep your hair soft and shiny, your nails long and strong, and your skin glowing and gorgeous. While you don’t have to adjust your products and habits with every season, it’s usually best to do a skincare audit twice a year. Read on to see the best expert nail care, hair care, and skincare tips for the winter.

Your Guide to Winter Skincare, Hair Care, and Nail Care

    skincare in the winter

Ready to winterize your beauty routine? Here are 13 ways to adapt your habits and product lineup to the colder season.

    1. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating is an essential step regardless of the season. And while it may sound intimidating when your skin is drier and more sensitive than usual, it will ultimately give you glowing skin. That’s because the buildup of dry, dead skin cells actually impede your skincare products—plus they can clog pores over time and lead to dullness and blemishes. “Exfoliation is necessary to remove the dead layer of skin on the surface so that hydrating products can do their job,” Darden says. For winter skincare, she recommends adding a chemical peel (like Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads) to your rotation once or twice a week. PSA: Don’t overdo it on the exfoliation, as that will damage your skin barrier and lead to dryness and irritation.

    2. Use a Retinol Regularly

You might have skipped retinol in the summertime (some people do because of the large amount of sun exposure, but you don’t have to). But in the winter, this active ingredient is a must. Darden recommends using a retinol product every other night to help with fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and acne.

If your skin is too dry and sensitive from the winter weather, another option is to remove your cleanser with gauze. “The gauze will gently exfoliate the skin in the process, resulting in brighter skin,” Darden says. If your skin can’t handle retinol, she says a product like her Lactic Acid Serum is a great option to exfoliate and brighten the skin instantly overnight. “ This helps to refine dull and congested skin for a more even-toned complexion.”

    3. Turn Down the Temperature

Stepping into a steaming-hot shower may sound tempting during the colder months. But excessively hot water can be harsh on the skin, and cause even more dryness. Darden recommends using warm water instead—this will help your skin retain moisture throughout the season. Pro tip: Turn down the temp when you’re washing your face too. It will help keep dry, flaky skin at bay.

    4. Apply Moisturizer While Skin Is Damp

During the winter, your skin loses its moisture rapidly. One way you can restore its hydration levels is by applying your moisturizer when your skin is still damp. After you bathe, your first inclination might be to towel dry immediately after. But leaving your skin somewhat damp before applying moisturizer can help revive dry, dehydrated skin. “It’s beneficial to apply moisturizers while skin is damp so that they absorb better,” Darden explains. By leaving some moisture on your skin, the lotion will lock and seal in the hydration for gorgeous, glowing skin.

    5. Invest in a Humidifier

The cold air outside and the dry, hot heat inside zap your skin and hair of moisture, which can cause severe dryness and frizzy, brittle hair. Help combat this by investing in a humidifier. It’s a small change that can make a big difference. “Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night will add moisture back into the air and help keep skin comfortable and hydrated,” Darden says. (We recommend Hey Dewy’s small, personal humidifier, which you can use everywhere—from your desk to your nightstand to your car).

    6. Don’t Forget SPF

One of the best winter skincare tips by dermatologists? Wear hydrating sunscreen. Yes, you read that right. Even during the colder, darker winter months, your skin needs sun protection. That’s because harmful UV rays can still cause damage to your skin through those gray, snowy clouds (yikes!). Help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer by using your SPF every single day.  To ward off winter skin woes, look for sunscreens that also contain hydrating ingredients, like Elta MD’s UV Clear formulation. It contains niacinamide, a hydrating agent to help nourish and protect your complexion. Apply it as the last step in your skincare routine to keep your skin happy and healthy.

    7. Add Hyaluronic Acid to Your Lineup

By now, you’ve likely heard of hyaluronic acid. But what it is, and what does it do? It’s a sugar molecule that our bodies naturally produce. It attracts and retains water to help our skin look plump and hydrated. However, our levels can be affected by factors like age and environment (we’re looking at you, winter). To give your complexion a boost, try incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum before your sunscreen in the morning and before your moisturizer at night. “Using a hyaluronic acid serum will help to deeply hydrate and plump up the skin,” Darden says.

Another way to boost your HA levels? By eating hyaluronic acid foods (think: bone broth) or taking a hyaluronic acid supplement (like HUM’s Glow Sweet Glow). Supporting your body’s hyaluronic acid levels can help restore moisture to your complexion.

    8. Switch to a Heavier Moisturizer

As the humidity in the air goes down, it becomes critical to add hydration back into your skin. One way to do that? By investing in a heavier moisturizer for the winter season. Lotion and creams are a mixture of oil and water. However, creams are heavier and contain more oil (while lotions are lighter and contain more water). During the winter, look for creams, which are heavier and will replenish the oil your skin cells have lost in the harsh weather.

Whether you use it as a night cream or first thing in the morning, a heavy moisturizer will help trap moisture and lock it in so you don’t experience any dryness, itchiness, or flakiness. If you have oily skin or are acne-prone, look for an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

    9. Take HUM’s Red Carpet

Just like your skincare routine, it’s also a good idea to adjust your supplements for winter. Because nutrition plays a major role in the health and appearance of your skin and hair, HUM’s Red Carpet is one of our go-to additions for winter. It contains black currant seed oil and vitamin E to nourish hair follicles and hydrate skin. In a customer survey, 94 percent of users reported that their hair felt stronger, shinier, or healthier after taking it for three months.

    10. Dry Hair Before Going Outside

We know mornings can be rushed, and leaving the house with wet hair happens. But it’s critical to dry your hair before braving the cold weather. That’s because your wet hair will expand rapidly in the cold water, which can put you at risk for breakage (plus it can make your color fade faster). Instead, use a warm (not hot!) blow dryer to dry out your hair post-shower.

    11. Get a Gentle Cleanser

Step away from the clarifying cleanser. While you might normally use an intensive cleanser in the summer (because of the summer sweat and grime), it can end up doing more harm than good in the winter. Instead, try a gentle cleanser (made with hydrating ingredients and free of harsh ones like exfoliants or salicylic acid) to help keep your skin’s hydration levels intact. “A gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin is essential for all skin types, especially in the winter,” Darden says. Look for formulations with gentle, nourishing ingredients, like Darden’s Cleansing Serum. It contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which help to draw moisture to the skin. It also contains oat bran extract, which helps to repair the skin’s barrier and prevent moisture loss.

    12. Use a Weekly Hair Mask

Dry air also means dry hair. Help revive your strands by using a hydrating hair mask once a week. Apply the mask and let it sit in your hair for 10 to 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Your hair will feel softer, look shinier, and feel healthier. Another winter hair care tip: Use hair oil on the ends of your hair before bed as an overnight beauty treatment to rehydrate your hair.

    13. Hydrate Your Hands

Between the cold, dry air and constant hand washing (we see you, flu season), your hands can feel extremely dry. When this happens, your nails and your nail cuticles also dry out, which can cause cracked skin around the nails, split cuticles, and brittle nails. Give your nails some TLC by applying a nourishing hand cream throughout the day (especially at night!). And for an extra boost, try taking HUM’s Killer Nails to help support strong, healthy nails from the inside out.

What is skin cycling? Dermatologists break down everything to know about the popular skincare practice—including the benefits and the drawbacks.

It seems like there’s a new beauty trend going viral on the internet every day. And while most are debunked by dermatologists (think: using at-home filler pens, applying raw lemon juice to your skin, and putting toothpaste on pimples), one trend has earned the approval of many skin professionals. It’s called skin cycling, and it’s captured the attention of skincare gurus and beginners alike.

The practice involves a simple, easy-to-follow routine that encourages people to use active skincare ingredients carefully and sparingly over an extended period of time versus all at once. This is a large departure from the advice to load up on active skincare ingredients and exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate (we’re cringing just thinking about it, TBH).

Skin cycling is a gentler approach that can work for nearly anyone. So what is skin cycling exactly and how can you use skin cycling in your routine? We spoke to dermatologists to get their honest thoughts on the trend and how to do it. Here’s what they had to say.

    What Is Skin Cycling?

    skin cycling routine

So what even *is* skin cycling? “Skin cycling refers to rotating different products each night to prevent irritation that can occur with too many active ingredients and gives the skin an opportunity to recover,” explains Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York. “It works to prevent over-exfoliation by switching out products in your skin-care routine and giving the skin a chance to recover.”

The problem with overdoing your skincare is that you risk damaging your skin barrier (the outermost layer of your skin), which can lead to dryness, redness, irritation, and breakouts.

The term skin cycling was originally coined by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe on TikTok. Bowe recommended a four-day skincare routine to help people use their skincare products safely and effectively.

    Skin Cycling Routine

    benefits of cycling for skin

So, what exactly is the skin cycling routine? Here’s the breakdown from Dr. Bowe’s video. First, you should start by washing your face every night with a gentle cleanser. After that, follow this guide:

    • Night one: Exfoliate (preferably with a chemical exfoliant, like glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid)
    • Night two: Retinol (or prescription retinoid, like tretinoin or Retin-A)
    • Night three: Recovery with moisturizer
    • Night four: Recovery with moisturizer
    • Repeat

It should be noted that these recommendations are for the nighttime. That’s because active skincare ingredients can make your skin more sensitive (to the sun or to pollution in the air, for example). During the daytime, make sure you apply your antioxidant serum and SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.

    Benefits of Cycling for Skin

    what is skin cycling

Sounds simple, right? That’s the idea. Using actives sparingly and allowing your skin to take a break can help you in the long run. Plus, it protects you from any potential irritation or damage. Read on to learn more benefits of skin cycling.

It’s a Safe Way to Introduce Actives to the Skin

The world of skincare actives is exciting. These ingredients are targeted to treat a certain condition and work extremely well. However, since they’re generally quite strong, your skin may need some time to adjust. That’s where skin cycling comes in. “It’s a great way to introduce actives in the skin, especially if you are overwhelmed with what to use and how often to use it,” says Mamina Turegano, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, internist, dermatopathologist, and co-founder of Skintap.com based in New Orleans. “Retinols and chemical exfoliants are important active ingredients for skin health, including texture, even skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles.”

    It’s Beginner-Friendly

There’s no doubt about it: Skincare can be complicated. One of the benefits of this four-day cycle is that it works for anyone—regardless of your knowledge of skincare. “Starting with a skin cycling regimen is a good starting point for most people and prevents people from potentially over-exfoliating their skin,” Dr. Turegano says. Still, it’s important to be careful about what you’re using on your complexion. If you’re using a super-strong retinol or chemical exfoliant, (or if you just have sensitive skin), you’re still at risk of doing some damage to your complexion, Dr. Turegano says.

    It Protects Your Skin Barrier

The biggest benefit of skin cycling? It protects your skin barrier—which is key for overall skin health. Exfoliating too often can compromise and even damage the skin barrier, leading to dehydration, redness, irritation, and acne. “Skin cycling prevents irritation and over-exfoliation, allowing you to be consistent with key active ingredients,” Dr. Garshick says. “By helping to support the skin barrier, skin cycling keeps the skin looking healthy and refreshed.”

    Who Shouldn’t Try Skin Cycling

While skin cycling is touted as a great routine for anyone, there are people who may not benefit from the trend. “Many people, including those who deal with acne, may need to use a retinol or prescription retinoid more frequently to get the benefits,” Dr. Turegano says.

Additionally, those with sensitive skin have to be mindful of the strength of their chemical exfoliant. “If the exfoliant is a higher strength, using it more than once a week may be too strong for them,” Dr. Turegano says.

In general, experts recommend going to a dermatologist to get a customized skincare routine based on your unique needs. While skin cycling appears to be trending, it’s actually quite common for dermatologists to create skincare regimens that involve using actives and taking breaks in between.

    The Takeaway

Whether you’re new to the skincare scene or you’ve got a 12-step routine, it’s worth looking into skin cycling. It’s a tactical way to use active skincare ingredients without subjecting your skin to unnecessary irritation and distress. However, if you’re dealing with acne in particular, you’ll likely need to use retinol more often in order to see results.

Ultimately, skin cycling is a term to describe a safe, responsible skincare regimen. It may not work for everyone—which is why it’s best to see a dermatologist to get a routine tailored to your unique needs.

But if you’re looking for a way to refresh your skincare routine, it’s worth giving skin cycling a try. Sticking to a consistent regimen is the best way to get a glowing, clear complexion.

No less than seven people have mentioned sea moss or sea moss gel to me in the past couple of weeks, so I knew I had to look into it. The kicker? Each person said they heard it was good for different health concerns. This always gives me pause, but the ingredient is clearly having a moment: The #seamoss hashtag clocks in over 272 million views on TikTok.

As with many health and beauty trends, sea moss isn’t new. In 2020, even Kim Kardashian tweeted that she’s a fan of sea moss smoothies—though it’s been around longer than that. In fact, you may already be using or consuming it in your daily life without even knowing it. So, what exactly is it and should you be seeking out this ingredient for your next smoothie or face mask? We asked both a dermatologist and registered dietitian to share what the science says about sea moss.

    What is Sea Moss?

Sea moss is an edible red seaweed found on rocky shores in the Northern Atlantic. While sea moss is the of-the-moment moniker, it’s also known as Irish moss, or its scientific name, Chondrus crispus. You may have heard of it more commonly called carrageenan.

    Sea moss skincare

Carrageenan is an extract from certain red seaweeds, primarily Chondrus crispus, that has been used as a thickening agent and emulsifier in food and beauty products for decades. These are just a few places you may spot carrageenan on a label:

    • Yogurt
    • Nut milks
    • Ice cream
    • Creamers
    • Processed meats
    • Vegan or plant-based cheeses
    • Moisturizers
    • Facial serums
    • Gel creams
    • Cleansers
    • Toothpaste

So, if you’re consuming or using any of the above products, you’ve likely already come into contact with sea moss.

    Is Sea Moss Safe?

Carrageenan derived from sea moss may be safely used in food, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Some research has pointed to carrageenan’s detrimental effects on the G.I. tract in animals as a reason to pull it from human diets, but other research has found that it may have benefits. A 2018 review of the available research on carrageenan found that there is not enough conclusive evidence on either side of the argument and more research is needed.

One thing to note about the FDA’s approval of carrageenan as a food additive is that they generally assume you’re eating it in small amounts (only a little bit is needed to help make your plant-based yogurt taste creamy!) That doesn’t mean they’re okaying you to dive into a jar with a spoon daily, like some users are doing on TikTok.

“Sea moss gel is generally safe to consume since it is a type of seaweed, which is safe,” says Jennifer Martin-Biggers, PhD, RD, HUM’s VP of scientific affairs and education. “However, seaweed is known to be prone to high heavy metal levels if grown in areas that do not control for environmental pollution.”

As for topical applications, the Environmental Working Group rates carrageenan as “Good,” and the ingredient scores low for common concerns like cancer, allergies, and immunotoxicity.

    Sea Moss Benefits

There are many health benefits to seaweed, in general, and seaweed for skin has also become more popular. For its small size, seaweed is packed with vitamins and nutrients like iodine, iron, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants.

These are a few potential benefits that are specific to sea moss:

    1. It’s Nutrient-Dense

Like other seaweeds, Irish moss packs vitamins and minerals into a small package. A 2-tablespoon serving of raw sea moss contains:

    • 18.2 micrograms folate, 5 percent of the Daily Value
    • .89 milligrams iron, 5 percent of the Daily Value
    • 0.047 milligrams riboflavin, 4 percent of the Daily Value
    • 14.4 milligrams magnesium, 3 percent of the Daily Value
    • 47 milligrams iodine
    • Trace amounts of zinc and copper

“While we know the nutritional profile of seaweed and it is generally healthy, most of the research on the health benefits of seaweeds comes from epidemiologic studies that evaluate associations between what people typically eat in their diets and if they develop disease over time,” explains Martin-Biggers. “There is a need for intervention studies (where people are given seaweed to consume compared to a placebo) to confirm the health benefits that are hinted at in experimental studies and the epidemiologic data.”

    2. It Helps Skincare Products Absorb Better

“In one study, carrageenan has been shown to enhance absorption by acting as a vehicle for active ingredients,” says Hysem Eldik, MD, a dermatologist at Marmur Medical in New York City. “This allows for more product to permeate through the skin when it is combined with carrageenan versus if the ingredient was used alone,” he explains. “It has also been studied to act as a scaffolding for healing properties and applied to wounds allowing for absorption and penetration into the wound.”

    Sea moss benefits

    3. It’s Hydrating

Dr. Eldik says sea moss can be particularly beneficial for people with dry skin, as it has a net moisturizing effect and has emulsifying and gelatinous properties. As a topical, sea moss has some winning properties.

    4. It May Support Immunity

As for the claims on TikTok about sea moss boosting your immunity, Martin-Biggers says they may be true. “There are some preliminary studies in animals that show promising effects,” says Martin-Biggers. For instance, one study found salmon that consume sea moss show benefits to their immune response. Still, more evidence is needed in humans to confirm this benefit.

    Sea Moss Side Effects

Just like the benefits, the potential side effects depend a lot on whether you’re consuming sea moss or using it as a topical.

Some TikTok users have reported stomach issues after consuming sea moss gel, which tbh, might just be because they’re eating jelly that tastes like seaweed? Jury is still out.

But Dr. Elkin notes, “Ingestion of carrageenan has shown to be correlated with inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.” Hence, he advises that those with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea steer clear.

Also—while it would be pretty hard to eat *this* much sea moss, because seaweed is rich in iodine, one study found that eating 286 grams a day would put you above the upper limit for iodine. As a result, “Consuming too much can provide an excess of iodine which can be detrimental to your thyroid (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism),” says Martin-Biggers.

    The Takeaway

“Overall, it’s not necessary to consume [sea moss] for your health,” says Martin-Biggers. “I recommend focusing instead on improving your overall diet, and if you are looking for additional benefits, incorporating supplements that are more proven in research in humans to have benefits on your skin, immune system, and more.”

Though, if you still want to try sea moss, “Don’t take more than is recommended on the instructions or more than four grams per day,” she says. Martin-Biggers also recommends looking for reputable sources of sea moss.

For skin benefits, you may want to try topical products containing sea moss and its extract, carrageenan, such as:

Want to achieve plump, hydrated skin? Step away from the harsh skincare actives and take a cue from K-beauty skincare, which uses gentle ingredients for ultimate hydration. We spoke to Michelle Shieh, scientific communications manager at Laneige, to learn how to hydrate your skin like a pro.

When you think of Korean skincare, you may immediately think of those intricate 12-step routines that dominated social media for years. But while K-beauty may seem complicated, it’s rooted in one very simple principle: hydration. So if you’re wondering how to hydrate skin and get a dewy look, look no further than K-beauty skincare.

“Hydration is definitely an important pillar in Korean skincare,” says Michelle Shieh, scientific communications manager at Laneige. “We believe that hydrated skin is the foundation to addressing various skincare concerns.”

By hydrating your complexion, you can combat and prevent symptoms like TK, getting that signature K-beauty glow. Read on to learn more about why hydration is foundational to K-beauty skincare and the best way to hydrate skin.

Hydration: K-Beauty Skincare’s Best Kept Secret

how to hydrate skin active ingredients

First, the obvious reason you may be focused on skin hydration: “Dry and dehydrated skin can lead to flakiness, dullness, loss of plumpness, or even discomfort such as itchiness,” explains Shieh. But you don’t need to have super dry skin to benefit from hydrating tips and products. “Hydration is key to achieving healthy-looking skin,” says Shieh.

Not only can hydration improve skin conditions, but it can also help prevent new ones from cropping up. For example, if your skin becomes dehydrated, it may start to produce excess oil, which can lead to breakouts.

Another reason why K-beauty focuses on hydration? Keeping your skin properly hydrated ensures your skin barrier (the outer level of your skin) stays healthy and functions properly. If the skin barrier becomes damaged, your skin won’t be able to retain moisture and you may experience redness, irritation, sensitivity, flaking, breakouts, and pronounced fine lines or wrinkles.

What to Know About Skin Hydration

    skin hydration

Obviously, skin hydration is one of the biggest K-beauty secrets, but so is understanding the cause of your skin’s dryness. “There are actually two different situations that could be the case when we feel like our skin feels or looks dry: dry skin or dehydrated skin.

But what exactly is the difference between dry skin versus dehydrated skin? Both types of parched complexions are the result of low levels of moisture in the skin, just different types of moisture. “Dry skin is a skin type when the sebaceous glands don’t produce enough oil to nourish the skin,” explains Shieh. Some symptoms of dry skin include flakes, rough texture, exaggerated fine lines and wrinkles, redness, irritation, breakouts, and itchiness, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). It needs intense hydration from oil-based ingredients (think: heavy creams) to help replenish and seal the moisture in.

“Dehydrated skin is when the skin lacks hydration. This can be a temporary state that is caused by a change in season, climate, or geographical location (like when we’re traveling),” says Shieh. Dehydrated skin can be harder to spot. When skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate for the lack of hydration by producing excess oil, leading to an over-production of oil. This can block pores and lead to blackheads, acne, or other irritation.

It’s common for those with oily or acne-prone skin to not even realize they have dehydrated skin—only exacerbating their skin issues. For that reason, Shieh says hydration is as essential to those with oily or acne-prone skin types as to those with dry skin types. Incorporating the right kinds of lightweight, hydrating products into their routines (like hyaluronic acid, for example) can help the skin maintain a healthy water-oil balance. “Hydration is as essential to those with oily or acne-prone skin types as to those with dry skin types,” Shieh says.

But hydration is also important if you have normal or balanced skin, as your complexion is constantly losing water throughout the day. Your skin loses about 300 to 400 milliliters of water by skin diffusion every day, according to research. Applying moisturizing products after you wash your face, for example, locks in the extra hydration from the water and ensures your skin’s hydration levels stay constant throughout the day.

How to Hydrate Your Skin Like a K-Beauty Pro

Want to achieve K-beauty levels of skin hydration? Shieh reveals her favorite hydrating tips and ingredients that will give your complexion that viral glazed doughnut look.

    Think Gentle

While harsh skincare actives are touted for their impressive results, gentle, hydrating ingredients (like the ones found in K-beauty products) can help you achieve smooth, clear, luminous skin. This approach to hydration is one of the biggest differentiators in K-beauty skincare. These ingredients (both inactive and active) won’t disrupt your skin’s pH balance (like certain acids will) nor will they cause irritation, dryness, or redness (like retinol or other active skincare ingredients). Instead, they’ll replenish your skin’s moisture levels, giving you the ultimate glow.

    Stay Consistent

Another key to hydrating your skin like a K-beauty pro? Consistency. Korean skincare is all about being regimented with your routine (especially since there can be up to 12 steps sometimes!). Remember that skincare routine order matters: Apply your products from thinnest consistency (think: serums) to thickest (such as night creams) every day to see results.

    Reach for Ultra-Hydrating Ingredients

    Hyaluronic Acid

“One of my favorite hydration ingredients is definitely hyaluronic acid,” she says. “Hyaluronic acid is a humectant ingredient that helps draw moisture into the skin and has the ability to help hold onto large amounts of hydration while still being very lightweight.” This ingredient is a great option to help add intense hydration to all skin types—whether you struggle with dry skin or have dehydrated, oily skin.

Where to Find It: Laneige’s Water Bank Hydration Set, $45

“There are many types of hyaluronic acids out there, and not all of them are created equal,” Shieh says. “Laneige’s Blue Hyaluronic Acid in the new Water Bank collection is a micro-sized hyaluronic acid (it’s 2,000 times smaller than the hyaluronic acid used in our previous Water Bank collection) that is double fermented with deep-sea algae, which gets absorbed deeper and locks in hydration better to provide a more effectively multi-faceted hydration.”

    Squalane

Not to be confused with squalene (which is generally found in shark liver), squalane is a plant-based hydrating ingredient (and a favorite of Shieh’s). “It’s an emollient ingredient that helps add nourishment to the skin while helping to seal in hydration, perfect to pair with hyaluronic acid,” she says. “It mimics a component of our skin’s natural lipids so, it’s easy for the skin to take in.”

Where to Find It: Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, $29

Give your skin a much-needed hydration boost with the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. It contains this moisturizing ingredient in a lightweight, gel texture that will soak into your skin and replenish its hydration levels overnight.

    Shea Butter

Shea butter is an emollient that hydrates and softens the skin. It’s one of the top-recommended ingredients for dry skin, according to the AAD. Additionally, its thick consistency can help support the skin’s barrier. “Aside from making sure we are adding hydration, it’s also important to take good care of our skin’s moisture barrier to help seal in the hydration that we’ve provided,” Shieh says. “Without a happy moisture barrier, it’s hard for our skin to maintain long-term hydration.”

Where to Find It: Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask, $22

Given shea butter’s heavier consistency, it’s the perfect ingredient for a lip treatment. Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask contains this hydration superstar plus hyaluronic acid and powerful antioxidants for a supple, smooth pout. It’s time to take your beauty sleep to the next level. Check out our favorite overnight beauty treatments that will give you a glowing complexion, silky-smooth hair, and soft, kissable lips.

We all know how important getting enough sleep is. Your body begins to repair itself overnight—from clearing out neural pathways to boosting your immune system to building back your muscles. But your skin also reboots while you sleep. While you snooze, your skin fights off the damage it was dealt throughout the day (think: UV rays and air pollution) to counteract signs of aging. Your skin cells regenerate, creating healthier, stronger skin.

It makes sense then that it’s often referred to as “beauty sleep.” But getting enough sleep is critical for this to happen. Studies have found that people who get enough sleep (seven to nine hours) show fewer signs of aging, improved skin barrier function, and higher satisfaction with their appearance.

But you can take your beauty rest to the next level by applying overnight beauty treatments. Learn more about how to take advantage of the latest P.M. skincare and haircare products that work while you dream.

    What Are Overnight Beauty Treatments?

    overnight beauty treatments hair

Overnight beauty treatments are exactly what they sound like: treatments you apply before bedtime that sink in while you sleep for better results. Not only are they convenient (simply apply them and go to bed), they also have some serious benefits. They can help speed up skin cell turnover for a firmer complexion. Plus, they can help replace any moisture lost throughout the night so your skin glows when you wake up.

You may be wondering “Can I leave a hair mask on overnight?” or “Can I leave a face mask on overnight?” The answer is yes—as long as you do so thoughtfully. For example, if your face is prone to breakouts, you might not want to coat your skin in vaseline for hours on end. Similarly, you want to make sure you’re being careful with the overnight hair masks you use. Drenching your strands in coconut oil may hydrate them, but it could cause acne if it gets all over your pillowcase. However, there are lots of products that are specifically formulated to be left on overnight.

Still, if you’re worried about any breakouts or irritation from overnight hair masks, tie your strands up in a wrap to prevent the product from getting onto your face and body. And if you’re concerned about overnight face masks causing pimples, make sure you’re choosing products that are non-comedogenic (meaning they won’t clog your pores).

Why Should You Try an Overnight Beauty Treatment?

overnight beauty treatments overnight face mask

    Increased Effectiveness

The biggest benefit of applying an overnight beauty treatment (like an overnight hair mask or overnight face mask) is that it has hours and hours to sink in. “This is the longest amount of time that we usually get to keep products on our faces without washing or rubbing them off, so they can work better,” says Purvisha Patel, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Tennessee and founder of Visha Skincare. “There is also an increase of blood flow and temperature to the skin when we are sleeping, and that helps with the absorption of active ingredients in skincare products.” Because you’re not exposed to the elements (think: sun, wind, and air pollution), not interacting with others (read: kissing your significant other), not sweating too much, and less likely to touch your face, these products have a better chance of sinking into your hair and skin, allowing you to get the most out of them. Plus, some of these formulas are extra-thick, so it wouldn’t be comfortable to wear them during the daytime.

    Decreased Irritation

While some products help protect your skin during the day (think: antioxidant serums and sunscreen), others can make your skin more sensitive to the elements (such as retinol and chemical exfoliants). While you can still apply the latter during the daytime, you’ll experience less irritation if you apply them at night. Plus, they’ll have all night to work on your skin, which means you’ll wake up with refreshed, glowing skin.

    Combats Dehydration

Another great reason to apply hydrating overnight hair masks, face masks, and lip masks is that your skin actually loses water as you sleep. In fact, our skin can lose up to one liter of water while we snooze (more than we lose during the day), which is why using hydrating overnight beauty treatments can help. These products are specifically formulated to replenish the moisture levels in your hair and skin so you can wake up flawless (Beyonce-style).

    Convenience

Let’s face it: haircare and skincare can feel like a lot of work on your busy days. One of the best perks of overnight beauty treatments is convenience. All you have to do is apply the products before bed, and they do the rest while you sleep. Plus, you can easily wash it off during your morning shower, making the process of getting ready for the day a total breeze.

    The Best Overnight Face Masks

Want to wake up with glowing skin? Try an overnight face mask. These products are made to deeply hydrate and help penetrate the ingredients into your skin more. Here are the best overnight face masks to try. Pro tip: If you don’t want to ruin your sheets, place a microfiber towel on your pillow to help absorb any leftover product. “Make sure you sleep on your back—this ensures both sides of the face get your skincare benefits,” Dr. Patel says. And if you have sensitive skin, be careful about which products you use. “Don’t sleep in acids or masks with acids,” Dr. Patel says. “They could work overdrive while you sleep, making your skin inflamed.”

    overnight face mask laneige

There’s a reason this product is considered a holy grail by influencers and editors alike. This overnight hydrating face mask contains a blend of probiotics and squalane to help boost your skin’s moisture overnight. In a four-week study, 100 percent of the participants said they noticed increased softness and hydration after just one use.

Help support the skin cell renewal process with this exfoliating mask. It will help gently shed dead skin cells that can cause dullness and clog pores. Glow Recipe’s sleep mask is made with exfoliating AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), hydrating hyaluronic acid, and soothing watermelon extract (which contains amino acids). The best part? It’s pillow-proof, so it won’t make a mess.

When it comes to youthful, glowing skin, retinol is the key ingredient to use. But it can be irritating (especially if you’re in the sun), which is why it’s best to let it work its magic overnight. While this isn’t technically a mask, a few swipes of this overnight beauty treatment will help speed up skin cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and improve your skin barrier’s moisture function. In the morning, you’ll wake up with younger-looking, refreshed skin.

    The Best Overnight Beauty Supplements

Not every overnight beauty treatment has to be topical. In fact, you can support healthier skin and hair from the inside out with supplements. Here are the best supplements for beautiful skin.

    overnight beauty supplement mighty night

This supplement contains valerian root, passionflower, and hops to help promote deeper, more restful sleep (which is critical for our skin’s overall health). But it takes beauty sleep one step further. It’s also made with ceramides, which help the skin retain moisture and even out skin texture. Plus, it contains a powerful antioxidant that scavenges for free radicals (which are known to accelerate aging and cause dullness). Its final star ingredient is ferulic acid, which has been shown to protect the skin from environmental stressors in experimental studies.

If you’ve got your overnight face masks and overnight hair masks applied, simply give your sleep an extra boost with this supplement. It contains melatonin (which promotes restful sleep), vitamin B6 (which helps normalize your circadian rhythm), and calcium (which has been shown to improve sleep quality). Take one before bed and wake up feeling—and looking—refreshed.

    The Best Overnight Lip Masks

Lip masks can be highly annoying during the day—but so is waking up with chapped lips, which makes overnight lip masks so great.  Help combat dry, chapped lips by applying one of these overnight lip masks.

    overnight lip mask laneige

This lip mask is one of TikTok’s favorite lip products—and for good reason. It’s made with ultra-hydrating ingredients like shea and murumuru butter and vitamin C to deeply nourish your pout. The thick consistency slowly melts into your lips overnight so you wake up with super-soft lips.

This one technically isn’t an overnight lip mask, but its thick consistency makes it feel like one. It contains shea and murumuru butter in addition to vegan wax to hydrate and soothe parched lips.

Struggling with cracked lip corners that just won’t go away? You could be dealing with angular cheilitis instead of chapped lips. Certain diets may leave you more at risk for this symptom—here’s what you need to know.

You’ve got your trusty lip balm—and you’re swiping it on all day, every day—but you’re still dealing with cracked lip corners. If that’s the case, there’s a chance they may be more than just flaky, chapped lips, especially if nothing seems to fix it. It may be a condition called angular cheilitis.

Find out what causes cracked lip corners, how they differ from dry, chapped lips, and how to heal cracked lip corners fast.

    What Causes Cracked Lip Corners?

    cracked lip corners close up

One of the main culprits behind cracked lip corners is angular cheilitis, a fungal infection. Angular cheilitis has a few  common causes:

    Nutritional Deficiency

“Nutritional deficiency is one of the more common reasons why someone may have these cracked lip corners,” says Angelique Freking, DDS, dental director of Park Slope Dentistry in Brooklyn, New York. (Which might explain why your lip balm strategy isn’t working.) Specifically, having a vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, and a lack of protein can lead to angular cheilitis. B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in red blood cell formation, nervous system function, and DNA synthesis, but your body only gets it through the diet (specifically from animal products) or supplements. Along with cracked corners of your mouth, signs of B12 deficiency include joint pain, numbness and tingling in hands and feet, depression or anxiety, and yellowing of the skin.

If you’re vegan, vegetarian, or follow more of a plant-based diet, you may be more at-risk for these vitamin deficiencies. It’s important to note that being a vegan itself doesn’t cause nutritional deficiency. But not following a well-planned vegan diet, where you’re not replenishing the nutrients you’d otherwise get from animal foods, can put you at risk of falling short on these important nutrients. About half of vegan adults were found to be deficient in vitamin B12, according to a past research review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vegetarians were also found to be at risk of this deficiency.

So, how does a nutritional deficiency lead to angular cheilitis? Research suggests that nutrient deficiencies affect oral tissue homeostasis (or the growth process of new cells), decrease resistance to things like bacteria and fungi, and put a damper on tissue repair. Additionally, a study found that your oral health is somewhat dependent on vitamin B12 and a deficiency can lead to a range of oral problems. Finally, a vitamin B12 deficiency can negatively impact your immune system, which can make you more susceptible to things like fungal infections.

    Excess Saliva

Cracked lip corners are also common amongst elderly folks who wear dentures or babies who use a pacifier. In both situations, the corners of the mouth act like a reservoir for saliva, and the wetness creates a perfect environment for inflammation and cracking.

    Oral Thrush

Oral thrush, a fungal overgrowth, is another possibility that leads to red, cracked corners of the mouth, though the condition typically also comes with other signs, such as white lesions in your mouth, according to Mayo Clinic.

    What is Angular Cheilitis?

Angular cheilitis is an inflammatory skin condition that targets the corners of your mouth, resulting in cracks, irritation, and sores, according to Cleveland Clinic. Normal fungi that live on your skin can settle into these cracks and grow—and this overgrowth is what causes symptoms like redness, swelling, and discomfort at the corners of your mouth.

Angular cheilitis is often mistaken for cold sores or other bacterial infections, says Dr. Freking, but there are a few telltale signs that what you’re dealing with is angular cheilitis and not something else. “Angular cheilitis is different from having dry lips, something that’s so common in winter,” says Dr. Freking. Chapped lips mean your entire lips are dry, whereas “angular cheilitis really focuses itself on the corners of your mouth and typically on both sides,” she explains. It may feel dry and itchy with a bit of burning.

It’s also possible to have a mild case of this that’s been going on for a long time. You might not even realize it’s affecting you. After all, chapped lips are so common, it’s easy to assume that’s what’s going on. And it’s also easy to get used to them and tolerate the condition, brushing it off with oh, the corners of my lips have just always been dry

How to Heal Cracked Lip Corners Fast

how to heal cracked lip corners fast

Looking for angular cheilitis treatment? First thing’s first: You’ll want to get to the bottom of what could be causing your cracked lip corners before moving on to treatment. This might involve getting a blood test to check for a nutritional deficiency (especially if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or on another diet). Or, it might involve chatting with your dentist to see if it’s the result of irritation from your toothpaste or aggressive flossing habits. In that case, talk about better options for you in both products and techniques.

    Tackle Your Diet

If you have a nutritional deficiency, the first step is tackling your diet. “I’ve known people who have gone entirely plant-based and start eating lots of vegetables, but they haven’t been conscientious about replacing the vitamins that are in meat and dairy,” Dr. Freking says. A well-planned diet will help you focus on plant-based foods that are rich in these nutrients (such as nutritional yeast, lentils, and kidney beans for B12, and spinach for iron). If your diet is low in protein, you can add vegan protein sources like lentils and beans, tofu, tempeh, nuts, and seeds.

    Supplement as Needed

While it’s important to add these nutrient-rich plant-based sources, you may still need a supplement to reach your daily B12 intake. HUM Nutrition’s B12 Turbo contains 1,000mcg of B12 in its most bioavailable form. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, it’s reasonable to take a B12 supplement and see if it helps you, says Dr. Freking. Make sure to follow up with your doctor to recheck levels as advised.

    Care For Your Lips

In addition, also maintain some smart lip-care habits. Avoid licking your lips, which has been shown to lead to angular cheilitis. Use lip balm regularly to hydrate lips. Once your angular cheilitis clears, you can toss your old lip balm and get a new one, says Dr. Freking. It’s not an absolute must, though (you won’t reinfect yourself with the old one, but a fresh one is best.).

    Seek Professional Help When Necessary

Lastly, never hesitate to reach out to your dentist or another health professional about questions you have regarding new lip symptoms you don’t understand. “As dentists, we look at heads and mouths all day long, and looking at your lips is part of the exam,” says Dr. Freking “We’ll have a good idea if something is normal or not—and if something doesn’t look quite right, we may refer you to another doctor.” From there, it should be all smiles ahead.
